Garmin Edge 810
« on: 06 January, 2013, 03:38:47 pm »
Going to be properly launched at CES

https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=160&pID=112912

Evolution of the 800 it seems.  Big changes are the ability to sync to your phone (via Bluetooth I assume).  This allows instant upload of rides once you've finished (and presumably to Strava as well) and live tracking (allow followers to see your location in real time).

Also has weather forecasting built in (via the phone - so not very useful as you could just look at the Met Office webpage or appropriate App!).

I am sure that Live Tracking etc. will batter your phone's battery life - but quite appealing for rides like LEL.
Right! What's next?

Ooooh. That sounds like a daft idea.  I am in!

And also the Edge 510, which seems to be a touchscreen version of the 500. Plus it has the phone connectivity.
It seems the 510 works with Glonass, though the 810 doesn't.

Any idea if the Bluetooth protocol will be vaguely open?

(...not wildly optimistic based on Garmin's previous track record, but looks like you could do some interesting stuff...)

Surely the "adding" bluetooth is just an extension of ANT?  From what I remember ANT is VERY short range, small subset, BT.

I don't think so.  ANT is pretty special-purpose (although it is still running in the 2.4GHz band).

The more recent Bluetooth Low Energy stuff looks like it could do the jobs people currently use ANT for, but it's not compatible.

The only real advantage it would have for me (rather than just stuff that is cooler than my Edge 800) is if it can record a ride more than 350-400km long (as they crash horribly at around 350km).

I suspect that will never be fixed in the Edge 800 (as people who ride more than 350km are in a small minority and the firmware hasn't been updated for over a year anyway now).

Oh Great! I bought a 800 three weeks ago thinking I was now finally right up to date by replacing my 605.

A rather detailed review here: http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2013/01/garmin-edge-810-in-depth-review.html
And for the 510: http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2013/01/garmin-edge-510-in-depth-review.html
The 510 is quite a bit larger than the 500, nearly as big as the 800/810.

On the iPhone side of things there's already an App for that ...  I would imagine Android and Windows Mobile are similarly endowed?

My Edge 500 recorded a journey of 585km before the battery decided it had done enough after recording for 8 hours 25 minutes.  (Obviously I wasn't cycling on this particular journey!)

Does the new 810 work with an i pad or do you still have to plug a lead in the sides of everything to download and therefore have to have a laptop to use the gps to it's full potentail.

Is technological progress slowing down?
My excellent 705 died after 5 years of almost daily use. I have replaced it with an 800 which has a bit more functionality than the 705 but in truth is hardly more than a minor upgrade. Similarly the 810 is not exactly an earth shattering development.
After my 800's lifespan I do hope that I will replace it with something that does all the usual + gives pothole alerts + the ability to tazer 4 wheel drive pilots who pass too close.

Well I am a first time user of a Gps and am just getting to grips with my 810, a big selling point of the Garmin 810 is that there is a smartphone App that syncs the phone to 'Connect Garmin' website then via Bluetooth onto the Garmin 810, so in theory you can plot a route on 'Garmin Connect' and send that to the Garmin 810 without having to plug it into you computer, vice versa when you get back from a ride you can send the App data from the Garmin 810 to update the 'Connect Garmin' website, you can also study the data via the App itself on your Smart Phone without having to turn your pc on.

Hmm yes - and if I read it correctly, it can text your position to a loved one on the fly, so they can see exactly where you are...

presumably, if you don't know what you are doing with it and your partner does it can also text your position on the sly.  ;D
It is simpler than it looks.
