As a reformed Saturday boy at Halfords I loved Carrera.  They were a joy to build service and sell compared to the Apollos!  :)
It takes blood and guts to be this cool but I'm still just a cliché.

My first MTB was a Carerra Quatro Comp GT that had 531 main tubes, I got the frame for £50 off a mate and built it up and raced it, as a junior I was rarely out of the top 5 in local cross country races, so not bad bikes by any account.

Trek, Specialized, Giant, Cannondale etc all make excellent bikes and the name wouldn't put me off any of them.

The current stable consists of a LOOK, Isaac, Van Nicholas, 2 x Specialized (they're twins) and a Roberts that has the original piss take MTB name.

About a month before my Omega got knicked. Very annoying as I didn't have anything to ride on the road really until the Enigma arrived!

I have a Carrera Vulcan mtb. For around £230 it's an excellent entry-level hardtail, and does fine for my relatively rare excursions off-road. I also have a 2005 Cannondale R1000, which has one of the finest aluminim frames ever made (CAAD8) - way better than my moderate ability justifies!

I also own a Kinesis, and a Univega (same company as Raleigh, who make - but don't sell in UK - some very upmarket race bikes) and an SJS mongrel badged only by my old RAF nickname!

Trek - So dull, just 'cos Armstrong rode them doesn't mean everybody else has to.

Cannondale - pretentious, overpriced toss.

Giant - I just don't like the name.

Raleigh - Sorry TOKaMak, I know they made good bikes in the past, but they ruined their reputation in their BSO era.

Dawes - too square.

Any bike with some random bloke's name written on it.

And of course "Carrera". Actually, it's quite useful because whenever you see someone on a bike with that written on it, you know to give them a wide bearth as their bike handling skills are going to be nonexistent. Just like their knowledge of bikes.

Edit: I guess I may have offended some people there! Sorry, only my opinion  :P

I'm not offended but you have to look at these things in context don't you?

I have a Carrera Kraken and all things considered it was and is a fantastic purchase.  Had it not been going for £199 in their half price sale I would not have got back into cycling after  a break of 20 years, I would not have lost three stone AND I would not have found my way to the wonderful world of ACF/YACF.

For a low end MTB it isn't bad and with Conti Sport contacts it makes a reasonable urban utility steed.

I know Halfords have their shortcomings but they do give some people a level of accessibility from which they can progress...I only went in there to get a headlamp bulb for the motor.

In my defence I did get a Specialised Roubaix Expert earlier this year.
