Cataract op idea
« on: 07 January, 2015, 09:14:13 am »
I had my right eye done in Feb 2014, and the left one is due this coming Feb.  I'm short-sighted, with about -2.5 in each eye, and last year I told the surgeon to simply give me -2.5 again so that I wouldn't have to change glasses.

I'm now thinking about asking him for a total correction in the left eye, with the idea that I could get a plain lens for that side of my glasses for non-cycling use, but on the bike I could do without the glogs and have one eye for the road and the other for the binnacle.  I'd still have enough input on the right to have 3D perception, and I could finally stop having to squint over my glogs to read the GPS.

It might feel a bit phunny at first, but I'd probably get used to it.

What does the panel think?

My optometrist friend (and PBP stoker) is a big fan of differing vision correction for each eye, for exactly the same purpose that you are considering.

-2.5 isn't very short-sighted, I don't think you would have a problem.

I'm -4.5 in one eye and -3.75 in the other. Without glasses, I don't have a problem noticing vehicles, pedestrians or other cyclists. Couldn't find my way out of a paper bag, tho'.

I just wish now I'd asked for 100% in my right eye. Ah well.

Just remembered a fly in the oinment, though: I'll still need a correction for astigmatism. Drat. Still...

Then get some soft contacts for cycling?

Tried that 10+ years ago: they didn't correct the astigmatism.  I used to use hard contacts but they were hell when you got dust in your eye and you couldn't wear them more than 16 hours at a time.

You can get soft ones that correct for astigmatism now.

You can get intraocular lens to correct astigmatism.

Alternatively you could go with laser surgery after the cataract

You can get soft ones that correct for astigmatism now.

And have been able to for 30+ years - 'cos I've had them for shortsightedness plus astigmatism for that long.  First pair were custom machines as off-the shelf didn't go "extreme" enough for my astigmatism, but for 20 years  J&J and Cibavision Torics have done the job.

If you can find a contact lens specialist near you, that's the way to go, otherwise take a flight to blighty and visit these guys

That's interesting... I'll have a natter with the ophthalmo. Thanks for the heads-up.
