Spooky. The title of my original post magically changed to Segways, then back to Swegways.

Lithium, especially Lithium-polymer, batteries of a capacity big enough to usefully move a human around are scary, full-stop.  I imagine the self-balancing boards suffer from cheap & nasty chargers at a much higher rate than e-bikes or wheelchairs.

That said, it doesn't always need a big scary battery to start a fire...

Some e-cig chargers are reported to have this issue...

Li-ion is definitely a technology that can catch out the unwary. Even Boeing!
Strong stuff though, and makes a lot of fun things possible.
I had a remote control plane for a short... distance*.. and after watching some scary youtube videos of Li-ion batteries releasing the magic smoke I decided to keep the battery in the shed, in a metal tin with a loose lid.

I've mentioned my self-immolating Dell a few times. Didn't explode but caught fire and spent a good hour thereafter smouldering while the local fire department figured out what to do with it (risk of toxic fumes and scaredy American firemen). I was glad it was in the office and that someone was around to supervise its self-destruction.

Easy - dump in a bucket of sand and don't pour water on it. Leave well alone for a few days.

Scaredy American firemen preferred to get out their breathing apparatus and big pokey stick. This was the US, they once sent the actual bomb squad to remove an old bottle of old n-butyl-lithium from my fume hood.

Riding back to digs last night,

Quite a big chap out walking the dog, at first I thought, blow me he's got a pace on, good on him.

Then I noticed the blue glow, seriously walking the dog down the pavement using one of these stupid toys. I always thought one of the points of a dog was the exercise from the walks.

Amazon are offering refunds and telling owners to dispose of them through recycling centres. I wonder how many people keep the refund and 'forget' to dispose of the damned thing.
