10 speed sti for v-brakes
« on: 09 May, 2017, 08:11:46 am »
I have a tandem with sti and travel agents to 'make it work' I have a feeling that newer shimano sti levers have a longer cable pull, am I correct, if so, is anything still available in 10s?

To answer the question re: 10speed with new ratio, Tiagra 4700 is the only current 10 speed option that uses the newer longer pull ratio. It's also a bit of an odd duck as 4700 also uses the 11sp pull ration for rear derailleur, so is not compatible with older 8/9/10 speed mechs (but does use the normal 10sp casstte spacing!)

BUT

It's a 'longer' pull but not 'long enough' pull for normal V-brakes, you'll still be better off with travel agents, or mini-v's, but having said that I haven't actually tried any of the newer pull STI's with V-brakes in real life, mostly because it didn't seem worth it as the pull ratio change was small and still 'not enough' in my opinion.

But I'm all for practical experiment to see jsut how terrible/bad/ok/passable the combo would be :-D

Nearly all STIs launched post 2008 use what shimano (initially) called 'New Super SLR' (NSSLR) cable pull, as distinct from 'SLR' (~ for single pivot caliper brakes) and 'Super SLR' (~ for first generation dual pivot caliper brakes) which preceded it. Subsequent to the launch both retailers and shimano themselves have bandied about all manner of variations of this description which does not allow the actual nature of the brakes and levers to be easily determined.... ::-)

Anyway NSSLR cable pull is about 20% longer than SSLR and (IMHO) is a very good match for mini-Vs in the ~80-90mm range, but still too spongy if you try to use these levers with full Vs.

10s NSSLR variants include ST-7900, ST-6700, ST-5700, and ST-4600 models.

cheers

Our new tandem has 10s Shimano 105 levers and I supplied Avid Arch Rivals (full size Vs) to JD for fitting (I had them in my bottom drawer for years waiting for this usage).  While the brake worked fine the lever did pull very close to the bars, but the main problem was that I couldn't unhook the cable for wheel removal (which we do a lot for car transport).  I replaced with a set of mini Vs off my folder with much the same result.

I now have a travel agent in place with the Arch Rivals and I can unhook and the brake feels 'right' .  There may be slightly less power now but I think there is enough especially with the 203 rear disc.

may i add that shimano calls the newest brake pull ratio "slr-ev", and a good way to tell which sti's have that pull is to look at the gear cable. if it is hidden under the bar tape the brakes need to be slr-ev. so all mentioned above, except the tiagra which has to be st-4700 and paired with it's matching derailleurs.

I thought it changed when they went everything went 11 speed at 5800/6800/4700, or have I confused it with the change you mentioned above?

EDIT - apparently I did confuse it

yes but whilst underbartape gear cables signify NSSLR, not all NSSLR brakes use shifters with underbartape gear cables.

ST-4600, ST3500, ST2400 all use 'washing lines' yet also have NSSLR cable pull.
