Jack Brown Mile Muncher - 25.5mm road tyres, £15 each

As far as I know this is the first JBMM review in the world! I took a gamble on these and it paid off.

After carelessly letting a sharp flint wear its way through a rear gatorskin while on tour, I replaced them with the reasonably priced Planet X product, the Jack Brown Mile Muncher, which are manufactured by Panaracer. These are my first asian tyres and my verdict is: pretty good and I'm very happy. They only come in 25.5mm - some people have asked for 28mm but this probably won't happen as that's not how Planet X procure stock. Basically after Rivendell Cycles (the original vendor) couldn't flog them, PX bought up all their stock and are now flogging them off at a price much lower than Rivendell's.

PX bill these as a budget friendly equivalent of a Schwalbe Durano or a Conti Gatorskin, but with better ride quality and grip, and a lower cost.

They're available in tan/green or black. There's also a thinner and lighter "race" version which I've swerved because I really do hate punctures.

I've done 3 proper rides on these:

Ride London (short but tipping it down and replete with punctures for hundreds of poor souls - plus an 80 km ride to the east end to get paperwork the day before); one puncture in the east end on the way to registration, but held it together on the ride brilliantly.

Tramping the two loops (200km audax, and a 130km ride to Evesham the day before); no punctures/flats.

The London Orbital (300km audax around the smoke); one pinch flat. And a blow out immediately after because muggins here rushed the repair - making a proper job of it, it stayed fine.

Plus a fair bit of training rides and commuting.

Overall verdict is: pretty good and great value for money.

Things had a rocky start, with a puncture on the way to the east end the day before ride london, but during the event itself they aquitted themselves marvellously. No punctures at all, though I did pick some bits out with a penknife at the finish line! Anyone who did it this year can attest to how hard this ride was on everyone's tyres, even tubeless converts weren't safe.

The ride quality seems pretty good (25.5mm width is comfortable), and the grip is adequate even in the wet. During Ride London and the Orbital we had our share of showers, and I never felt in danger of skidding. The checkerboard tread pattern looks pretty good too, in my opinion.

I did have a pinch flat during the Orbital, but I think I rode directly over a large stone (whoops!) at speed. Changed the tube and no problems for the rest of the day, even in the small hours through the stone-streaked country lanes in wet and greasy conditions.

They fold up nicely, so I've got a spare in the saddlebag for if the worst happens and one gets slashed to ribbons.

Recommended pressure is 100-110 psi which has been perfect for me, even as a big chap and carrying touring kit, so a decent mini pump will have no problems coming up with the goods. When the inevitable happens I don't find them terribly difficult to remove and refit - the bead is folding kevlar, not stiff wire, as I mentioned.

Recommended!

I’ve got these on the back wheels of my trike. I’m happy with them so far (brevets up to 400km and fairly slow BHPV racing) and they are considerably cheaper than Panaracers.
