Musical instrument case repairs - lining
« on: February 15, 2019, 10:32:18 pm »
My son has a cello case in which the lining is coming away. The local instrument repairers are very good, but recommended Copydex, which isn't really working. The area coming away is quite large, and the edges clearly are supposed to be trapped under the band that goes around the edge of the case. Removing and refitting that could be a job.

Any suggestions of repairers? Within striking distance of North Herts would be good - Bedford, Cambridge, North London etc.

I would think this is something that most people could do themselves and it doesn't need a instrument repairer to fix it.

I would try a contact adhesive.

I agree that it is something that someone practical could do but if you would prefer to leave it to a professional and Beaconsfield in Buckinghamshire is not too far from North Herts for you then Rosehill Instruments can probably help. See www.rosehillinstruments.co.uk

Thanks both. Of course sticking it down wouldn't be hard, although there's also a bubble of lining coming away. The shop suggested cutting into that to get the glue behind (otherwise we have to pull it away to an edge).

However, the owner is a bit of a perfectionist, hoping for an invisible repair :) Since some of the edge has come out from under the band, we'd have to remove the band, and I imagine that that is a little more of a specialist job. I'll certainly suggest the Beaconsfield shop

If you search for "violin shop n16 North London" you will find a place that should be able to do it. They might be easier to get to from north Herts depending on transport.

Thanks, he's contacting them, and they're really only a walk from Finsbury Park.
