R.I.P Dr John

Mac Rebennack has died of a heart attack aged 77. A New Orleans legend.
Saw him on tour once and he was brilliant.

Here he is with another New Orleans legend Allen Toussaint on Mac's seminal LP "In the Right Place"

Dr John - Such a night:

I've had that LP on vinyl for over thirty years. Time flies.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

One of a kind. His mixing of blues and New Orleans culture/voodoo/2nd line rythyms was fabulous. Great performance in The Last Waltz with The Band

Had the pleasure of seeing him live once. He captured the attention of an 18 yo who normally listened to post-punk indie pop. That says something.

My late partner introduced me to the back catalogues of a lot of great musicians, and Dr John was one of them, along with Captain Beefheart, Tom Waits and Leonard Cohen.

I bought his autobiography as a birthday present for her. Another of my memories of her cut away.

I didnt realise until today that he played piano and sang backing vocals on some tracks on Exile on Main St including the sublime "Let it Loose".
