This is my best bike that I am / was intending to ride on PBP



Dunno what caused this, probably chain suck.  I had no idea there was any damage there until I removed the
cranks to check the BB

I have a carbon fibre repair kit.  And a spare bike.

it looks like the main damage is to the grey paint which flaked off. is there any damage to carbon underneath (the black shiny area not quite in focus)?

Yes, it's not just the surface. It's difficult to photo.  The damage has that "hairy" stuff in it that is the actual fibres of carbon.  It looks like there is a hole through to the hollow centre.  It's not just a very big scratch

I have done a similar thing, but to bone, not carbon.  You might care to share your findings about repair.

what is this carbon fibre repair kit, I have similar damage on my chainstay, definitely caused by the chain getting trapped in there. Although I have had it for many months and the bike seems to be fully functional. I was planning on taking it to carbon bike repair in surrey, but a more simple patch up might be more suitable since the bike still seems sound.

I also have some epoxy putty to use as "filler"
I don't have a can of clear coat however, I use nail polish for smaller nicks

I want to make a good job of this repair. Doing this properly is likely to be time-consuming.   PBP is really soon and I'm busy the next couple of weeks. So it makes sense to switch to the spare bike.  The best bike will be fixed after PBP

I met someone in the Alps once who was riding a frame that had completely broken across tghe main tubes and he'd repaired it himself, using carbon patches and bandages.  With no attempt to prettify, he then painted it white, and the end result was pretty much the bike frame equivalent of the Soldier In White:



He let me have a ride of it, it was light as a feather, stiff as a board and went like shit off a shovel.  He was inordinately proud of it.
It's not dark yet but it's getting there.

good thing about carbon is that of all* materials it is least likely to break and easiest and cheapest to repair - whether in the field or at a repair specialist. one thing it doesn't like though is sharp localised impacts which can delaminate and weaken the area (something to check after a crash etc.)

Welcome to the PBP last minute change to the spare bike because my best bike has broke gang.

I should have my best bike back before PBP, but not enough time to test it thoroughly with new components now so sticking to riding my old faithful. And my brand new replacement PBP handbuilt rear wheel has a mystery problem with it whereby the spokes will not keep tension in them so it has to be rebuilt with new spokes to see if that is the problem but should have it back for PBP.
