New rim for Boardman 09 Carbon bike
« on: October 18, 2019, 08:29:51 am »
Mate of mine wants me to build him a new rear wheel for his Boardman carbon road bike.

As much as I've build plenty of 36/32 holes wheels over the years, I'm not familiar with what rims [24 hole in this case] might be suitable for this bike. It's of reasonable quality is this bike so is deserving of a rim that's not too heavy, but not too expensive either.

The original rear wheel was built using a Ritchey Pro 24h, which doesn't appear to be readily available now.

Ideas appreciated.

edit: Or it might be just a easy to get him a new wheel - like so?

I've recently built a front up with Ambrosio P20s, mainly as they match my rear and are cheap! But it was a surpisingly high quality rim and easy to build, and they are massively discounted as they're being discontinued. For a wide tubeless ready rim it's a good choice IMO.

I'd be wary of building a 24h rear without an asymmetric rim for anyone heavy though...

DT Swiss R 460 is decent rim, available in 24 hole, about £30. https://www.bike24.com/1.php?content=8;product=123285;menu=1000,4,301,1635;pgc%5B16742%5D=16745
Or RR 411 / RR 511 if you want something fancier.

I'd start looking at the Kinlin 31T (Spa Cycles or Cycle Clinic) in assymetric version.

For a shallow rim you might use the 22T, but I've not built a rear of that with 24 spokes.

Ta very much peoples, gives me some ideas to go on.
It's been a while since I've looked at the Spa site, they've come a fair way over the years.
