HK has been running these wheels on her Kinesis Tripster AT commuter/ brevet bike. The bike was built up in October 2018 and has covered well in excess of 20,000km since then, all with Schwalbe Marathon Almotion 700x40C tubeless. HK is 60kg + fairly light luggage.

A front spoke broke recently, which I replaced. Not had to true them before that.

The Al freehub body has a steel insert to stop the cassette from notching it. The cassette still notches it a little but not too badly. A second steel insert roughly opposite the first would stop it completely.

Easy to mount tubeless tyres on and seals quickly. A track pump was enough for the front but an Airshot and second round of rim tape needed for the rear.

Today I discovered a couple of cracks in the rear rim. Time to claim on Hunt’s 3 year warrantee. https://help.huntbikewheels.com/support/solutions/articles/43000456092-warranty-and-rider-weight-limits

I am sorry to be a reply guy but if you can I'd really think hard about whether you can get rid of them/refunded somehow. Hunt products are downright nasty from what I can surmise; cheap components (e.g. pillar spokes and bitex hubs) put together cheaply but with a mahoosive markup.

Malcolm of Cycle Clinic will do you a set which would be leaps and bounds better. Sapim spokes not pillar, and put together by hand here instead of rushed out by the thousand in Taiwan. From what I can tell the price is pretty much identical too. https://thecycleclinic.co.uk/collections/road-disc-brake-wheelsets/products/borg22-disc-road-cx-wheelset-front-and-rear-heavy-rider-32-spoke

Thanks for the suggestion but I am an excellent wheelbuilder myself. If need be, I'll think about swapping in a replacement Kinlin rim down the road but Hunt look to be sorting the problem. Some of this wheelset's cost is the Son dynohub, so not entirely made from cheap components.

The wheel has apparently been replaced because of the time it would take for the existing wheel to be re-rimmed by Hunt. I say apparently because the courier's photo of where the wheel was delivered wasn't taken at my address. Ho hum...

I have the feeling basically all their wheel warranties are straight swaps - their suppliers are in the Republic of China so the time to ship it there, re-rim and ship back would be pretty wild.

Owners of these wheels - check, clean and service your freehubs.

My gf's rear wheel lost drive so I had it apart and found the pawls were caked in muck causing them to stick down. Upon cleaning, they were quite corroded too. She got a new freehub after that.

Interestingly I was just looking at some of the lights and found they sell a few made in ROK

About to replace the sealant in HK’s Kinesis’ Hunt wheels and saw the rear wheel was a little out of true. There were cracks originating at nine of the spoke holes in the rear wheel that had been replaced for the same reason in February. I have not trued this wheel. The front wheel was fine, no cracks and still true. Time to chat with Hunt again.

Edit: a replacement rim and rim tape is heading my way shortly.

I've still not had a replacement Hunt rim for my rear wheel from last year before PBP. 12 cracks on the rim

This would be the 4th rear wheel from Hunt but I fear I have become victim to J.Laverack lack of responsiveness  ::-)

Was it something you said? Once the three year warrantee is up, do you become persona non grata? The online chat on their website today seemed to do the needful but we are only two years (almost exactly) from purchase.

I've got an email trail with Laverack (unanswered of course!) going back to Aug last year so will try Hunt direct.

My rear wheel was rebuilt by them, new spokes and rim on the hub.
It had been a nightmare before that having had a couple of spokes fail at the nipple before the spoke holes cracked.
The front was fine, the front being Dyno Hubbed was built by hunt in house nor en mass where ever it is they get them done; make of that what you will.

Worth noting that on cost, I had Spa build a similar wheel (same rim, similar spokes, 105 hub) for much the same price.
I also eventually got Spa to build me a front wheel with a SON Delux and same rim and spokes, for... much the same price.

The replacement rim will arrive in the second half of October, which is a little longer than ideal. HK is continuing to ride the wheel but keeping a close eye on it.

It’s positive that they are replacing them, but surprising to find failures across several people and repeated identical mode failures. I always avoided them tbh as I could buy the same parts and build myself for less, but your experience suggests poor build and over tension i suspect. The rims on the Superdura don’t appear to be Kinlin (or particularly super durable!)

Never owned any, but I'm told they are just generic cheap hubs and rims, smothered with hype.

Finally had to resort to asking Laverack to respond to my emails I had sent between August & Dec 2019 and the telephone messages I had left on one of their Social Media posts in order to get their attention.  Not something I enjoyed doing, but given over a year had past since the original email and voicemails I had left in the intervening time, I was left with no other options - quite disappointing.

Laverack eventually asked me to contact Hunt direct with the impression I just needed to contact a certain person who would sort out the replacement... which I did and entered in to their customer service loop, which I found a bit patronising and had to go through providing the photos and all the info over again and eventually return the wheel to them for inspection!

I know Hunt were trying to help but telling me I was over inflating the tyres resulting in 12 spoke eyelet cracks after 3800 km from getting the wheel in May till the problem at the end of July. I was in fact running 15PSI lower than the max rating (60PSI, 35c tyres) and found their 'helpfulness' to be the last straw (essentially blaming me for their poor workmanship/quality....) I think I then pulled out the who do you think you are talking to card... and they changed their tune a bit.

I got a call back on giving me two options, a rebuild, 3-4 weeks or a new but cosmetically marked wheel.... I went with the new wheel but also asked for them to confirm the correct tension on the spokes.
Replacement wheel arrived today, couldn't see any cosmetic marks on the wheel from my quick look...

Overall, rubbish customer experience from Bike supplier, average to middling from Hunt.

I'll probably not run these tyres tubeless now and keep them to put winter tyres on or similar.... at least they are adaptable for through axle / QR so I can use them on more than one bike.

Joergen

Now in the second half of November without a replacement rim but I am well aware of logistics issues through UK container ports, both through my work and as notified by Hunt. I don’t expect international logistics to improve in the foreseeable future. 2021 might even make 2020 look mild, in this regard at least.

Sort of, https://novemberbicycles.com/blogs/blog/rim-reviews-fsw3-kinlin-xr31t
Kinlin make well-designed rims cheap enough that they tend to be my rim brake choices over the past few years.

I didn’t think the ‘super dura disc’ used the xr31t? The dimensions don’t really match up iirc (24 deep and 26 wide?)

If it is a 31t I hate think of what tension they’ve got on the rear ds spokes to crack rims so diligently. They are a properly strong rim.

November linked to the Race Aero SuperDura wheelset. I was referring to the concept of badge engineering, rather than the exact model of rim.

Ah, yes completely agree. I’ve built several sets of race aero for much less than Hunts, and before I’d seen them.

Just cleaning my Hunt x Mason 4Season Disc wheels and horrified to see cracks around 5 spokes on the back wheel. I'm at OCD levels of bike cleaning and the bike is washed down after every ride through the winter, polished and the wheels wiped down with GT85. So these cracks have all appeared at pretty much the same time because I've not noticed them previously. They're very fine but visible. The wheels have done 6900 miles from new, I'm not heavy (80kg) and I've run tyre pressures well within the safe margins Hunt state. They've only been used on the road. Unfortunately they are just 6 months out of warranty, so I guess I have to write that down to experience - I've never had such a failure before. I'll be shopping elsewhere for a replacement.
As an aside, is it safe to continue riding these for now, keeping an eye on the cracks?

Worth trying even if out of time - you may get lucky (or an offer of a discount perhaps?)
