...they hand you the keys and ask you to look after the shop for a weekend so they can go do a race.

Anyone else had something similar? Anyone got any last minute advice?

A friend had a small bike shop inside Tring Garden Centre. He knew I didn't have any work just when he wanted to go on holiday so he asked me to man the shop for a week.

Pretty much everything was straightforward, a question of general bike knowledge and adjusting - mostly setting up new bikes to suit the customer when sold.

There were a few customer questions or issues that I could not answer or solve and so it felt like the best customer service I could offer was to write these down so that my friend could pick them up when he returned, saving the customer from having to return and repeat everything the following week.

I can't imagine anything going wrong so long as you are not robbed.

You'll be asked to mend punctures all day then 15mins before closing someone will come in with something serious that they want fixing for their event on Sunday.

I have been invited to sleep inside a bike shop in advance of an early morning ride start the next day, but passed it up. A bunch of others did though.

That must have been a while ago! We've been in the area 20 years and I don't recall one there.

My best guess is that it was somewhere between 1995 and 2000. It was on the left of the garden centre's main door, as you approach it. For just one week it was a delightful thing to do.
