What colour is Makita?
« on: August 12, 2020, 11:12:08 am »

Just to fork off the battery powered tool thread.

Can anyone settle a discussion I was having with a friend.

What colour is Makita. Is it Blue, or is it Green?

Mine are blue but like Bosch, don't they do a cheaper range in green?

A quick Google reveals that they also do white??? versions of some tools but I cannot see any green ones.

They have a white/black range that comes with smaller batteries, aimed to be more compact. But the internals are the same, they have the same torque, rpm etc... Just typically smaller batteries.

Looking at a random variety of tools on the Makita UK website, I'd describe the colour as blue. It's a greenish blue but it's blue. Turquoise would be an accurate but unhelpful answer, maybe.

To get a real answer, you need to ask Kim.  ;)

Generic not-poo colour.

The colour of television, tuned to a dead channel.

Light blue.  Some of the Chinesium knock-offs that use Makita batteries are turquoisey-green.
Careful, Kim. Your sarcasm's showing...

As a Japanese company, their branding might well be ao.

I always find that one fascinating, as I live in a world when 90% of everything is some shade of green or blue.  Of course it's a linguistic thing, rather than a colour discrimination thing.

I think the important lessons here are:

a) Humans are bad at naming things.
b) When people talk about 'colour' they usually mean something more than just hue.
c) Languages evolve in interesting, but not necessarily sensible, ways.
d) People's ideas about colour are hopelessly entangled with their cultural and linguistic background.
e) It gets really fun when your cultural and linguistic background is mismatched with your lived experience of colour.
f) If you want to specify a colour in a universal way, you need to use SCIENCE, but don't expect that to clear up any arguments.

(I maintain that Makita is Blue on the basis that it's very clearly Not Green.  Green is a dark shade of Generic Poo Colour, and since Makita is closer to grey in intensity, it can't possibly qualify for Green status.  Not least because a green that light would be DeWalt.)

Makita stuff is blue, unless it's white.  If it's cheap it might be orange.

Bosch professional = blue; DIY (amateur?) = green.

What colour is Makita. Is it Blue, or is it Green?

Sometimes Makita tools are available in red:

So the best answer to the original question is probably: Any color.

It's a bit like tractors.  They always used to be a consistent colour for each brand until a few years ago, when it all got complicated.  Now we (me and the kids) have to read the labels.

I have that orange beastie.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

Perhaps it's tangerine?  :) Or even orangutan coloured? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Traditional_colors_of_Japan#Red_series

Only between 1993 and 1997.
That's a 1995 model you are looking at there.

Teal, innit.

A bloke I worked for many years ago (early 90s) had an old Makita jigsaw. The metal case was definitely orange. The tool itself was sort of orange and silver (I think)...
Those wonderful norks are never far from my thoughts, oh yeah!
