changed the socket front that had the plug from a dodgy fan-heater melted into it

Played about with a gas gun and blasted several years of dustbunnies, fluff and crumbs from my keyboard. That was the most fun I've had at work for ages. Shame it didn't get rid of all the welded on bits. Think it might be time for a new one...

Went to light the fire, and no firelighters.
So fettled some from knotted kitchen roll soaked in oil.
Fancy olive oil.

Apparently, that was a Bad Thing to do :-)

If it was Extra Virgin olive oil you'd have had a fair Joan of Arc analogue.

Cleaned the Domane, patched flat, picked umpteen bits of flint out of tyre.  Funny: had the devil of a time getting the first wall of the tyre (GP4000s II on XR2 rim) over the rim, but the second one was easy.

A while ago I bought a dynamo front light off Phil. He told me that the tabs for connecting a rear light were a bit broken but still usable. Some idiot (and I don't mean Phil) broke one a bit more. The same idiot yesterday dismantled the light and soldered short lengths of wire to what was left of the tabs and then fed these out the body of the light. I, er um. I mean the idiot then put connectors on this and then used a spare micro USB lead for the wire to connect this to the lovely new back light. Everything reassembled and working!

The lights onto the tree, and some string to hang cards from. Oh, and disposed of two dead mice our cat had thoughtfully left in the kitchen for us, plus the one in the outside larder trap.

You have a trap for larders? Is that a bit like a heffalump trap?

Heffalump is better than no sugar.

@rafletcher: I find that traditional snap traps are more reliable if you put them in a box with a single entrance - it channels the mouse onto the trigger from the front.  I don't like them though - last mouse I caught with a snap trap burst.

I fancy making one of these:

The best mousetraps I've ever used are branded as 'little nipper.' they look old school but they absolutely do the business. There is a 'big nipper' for rats but I've thankfully not yet needed to use it.

They work!  I found the remains of a rat in one in the garden a few weeks ago, and another whole one a week later

replaced trike's bottom derailleur jockey bearing - with a used one from another old wheel. Why do that? 'cause I didn't have a new one yet, and need to ride to work tomorrow.

A couple of days ago, I replaced the seesaw in my mousetrap with a roller made from 1" aluminium tube carried on ball-bearings.  The mice had got wise to the seesaw and were going round the edge of the bucket and across the pivot & elastics to take the bait.  Last night they obviously tried the same gambit with the roller, so this morning two of them are looking for breakfast in a neighbour's hedge.  Since we've only seen two for the last week, we're hoping that's the end of them.

Of course they come back; isn't that the idea?  In the search for a better mouse-trap you need practice.

I could put the mouse on a rocket and successfully launch it to Mars. LMC would still find it and bring it back.

Prep'd a new bike for eldest grandson (blimey, it's big enough for me - how time flies!).  My son, having bought the bike from Halford's, gave it to me to set up, rather than leave it to the shop. I should hope so!

Anyway, it's got these new-fangled disc brakes, so I had to look at a couple of YouTube videos to understand how to adjust them, something the factory had failed to do.  All set up nicely on the work stand, but as soon as I rode it there was a light scuffing noise, presumably due to having to bear my 68kg?  A bit more twiddling with the allen key and the job's a good'un.

Happy Fettling Christmas.

"Neighbour" as in down the far end of the village.

That's 10 we've got rid of so far: 2 found dead, 2 in snap traps and 6 alive in the bucket trap.  Lately we've only seen two about, so we're hoping that's it.

Replace the pressure relief device in the shower. I didn’t even know such a thing existed until it went pop the other day.
Clever thing.
And I’ll be clean again for Christmas.

Oh, I hung the new shower curtain. Does that count as fettling? No, didn't think so...

Only if it involved injury and/or power tools.
