I rode along the lane by the Wellesbourne airfiled today - just as they were running up the engines on the V bomber parked there* - the noise was amazing.
*they do it a couple of times a year - they used to drive down the runway and "abort the take-off" but it got too expensive to do with the amount of fuel it used.

It turns out that the rear gear mech is a 10 speed now running a 11 speed cassette. Tame mechanic has attacked it with a hacksaw and file and the full cassette can be used effectively. My knees are pleased

That's interesting - I might be demonstrating ignorance but I presume that the 10 speed mech has the same total travel ability as an 11 speed mech and different cable pull requirement for indexing - which wouldn't be an issue with a friction non-indexed shifter - so was it the total amount of cable pull required to get the full range and was the filing done at the shifter end to allow a greater range of cable pull?

Some newer 10-speed mechs, I think the 10-speed 105 (4700?), use the 11-speed pull ratio. Is that what you have?

Interested how any change to the mech has solved the chain-dropping-off-the-top-of-the-sprocket problem...

Oops! That's a point, Kim - searching to make sense of "the cure", I had overlooked what the actual problem was

Basically the mod changed the angle of the cable and increased the amount of pull available allowing proper engagement of the big cassette sprocket
I am running a friction system
