Announcing the WARTY.
« on: January 03, 2009, 05:53:33 pm »
Anyone who pays attention to a certain board cannot have helped but notice the RRTY, standing for Randonneur Round The Year, an award for long-distance cyclists. To achieve this award requires a certain tenacity, toughness, single-mindedness and the ability to avoid eye contact.

It gives us great pleasure to announce the WARTY, Wowbagger/Annie Round the Year.  This is for a completely different type of cyclist.  Eye contact is encouraged, as indeed are other sorts of bodily contact, however inappropriate.   There will be pub lunches, cafe stops, photographic opportunities, the occasional beach and more innuendo than you thought existed anywhere.

These rides will take place on an approximately monthly basis and be of 40-60 miles duration.  Anyone who succeeds in enduring a whole year's worth of this nonsense will be awarded a prize of an unspecified nature: they may well be certified.

We decided to include the Essex Christmas Pootle as the first of these rides so the esteemed company present on that august occasion are well on the way to acquiring the UK's most exclusive and highly coveted award. Olympic Gold Medals?  Two a penny.

The second in this sequence will be the Annie-versary ride on 10th January 2009, venue to be announced.

Oy, you can't retrospectively include the Essex Christmas ride before announcing the WARTY.  That puts all of us who weren't on it at an immediate disadvantage of completing the entire set (ie we can't !).
Actually, it is rocket science.

That's quite right but you'll only be a month behind the others. I'll tell you what: if you can stand 11 months of us we'll give you an extra one free!
Oh, Bach without any doubt. Bach every time for me.

OK, the Official January WARTY Ride is to celebrate Annie's birthday, which is on Friday. We are going out Saturday 10th Jan here.

Meet at Marks Tey for 9.30 (conveniently, there's a train leaving Lpoo St at 8.38 which arrives at 9.29. I intend to get on it at 9.02 in Shenfield so don't hog all the places!). Elevenses will be in Halstead (about 13 miles in) and lunch will be at the Red Lion, Church Hill, Finchingfield (those who came Up the Uts in August will remember that it rains there).

Shortly before the end of the ride there is a pub, the Shoulder of Mutton, in Fordstreet. It is not impossible that we will have a wee drinkie in here before saying our tearful farewells.

We hope to return to Marks Tey before sunset, but obviously cannot guarantee this. The ride is about 50 miles.

NSTN rating: good. All roads are marked at least yellow on the OS map, but there may be skog.

Of course, there is no guarantee that there will not be "shitloads*" of snow.

Please indicate below in the usual way if you plan to be part of this hilarious fiasco.

*A shitload is an unspecified large quantity as defined by my daughter.
Oh, Bach without any doubt. Bach every time for me.

I'd love to join some of your rides - but really too far away. If they are every month though, I may be able to make one during the year.

We could take advantage of our common geography & go together in one car, sharing petrol costs, one month...but not this current one.
Yeah or nay?

If you extrapolate this concept to a ride somewhere 'oop norf' and drop Wowbagger and substitute Torslanda then it becomes TARTY

Is that tenuous or what?

Can't make this one as I'm doing the Poor Student the day after. Will ride over again later in the year and join you all.
