The back roads around here (West Lothian) are still pretty icy so I was starting to worry about Sunday. The descent from the Rigg is fast and steep and any ice could make it lethal. The good news is that according to Metcheck (for Haddington) it's going to be a few degrees above zero for the next few days so I think any ice should clear.

I've now only got 3 days to think of another excuse! :-\

Has anyone had an e-mail or anything from the organiser confirming their start time yet?

I may be wrong but I can't remember getting confirmation in previous years. I'm sure you just found your name on one of the lists pinned to the wall inside the Town Hall and then made sure you were outside when the toun cryer yelled out your name and dished out the cards.

I have a peice of paper with a cross in a box that says (paraphrasing)

"very slow donkey - first away"

the words actually say "10.00 am"

I think the possibility if ice up on the rigg has to be 'high' no matter what the forecast says about Haddington tho'.

Met office only get as close as Leith:
    Sunny intervals     4°C     W     8 mph     22 mph     Good
dipping to -2 after dark

Musselburgh horse racing was cancelled today due to frost.  And they don't have narrow tyres to worry about.

On my commute from Musselburgh to Tranent the same patches of ice have been on the roads all day long for about a fortnight and don't seem to be thawing. The Lammermuirs still look quite white and I didn't bother going up them on Saturday as they were very snowy.

Maybe I'll take the commuting bike with spiked tyres :P

Yikes. I'm not fond of ice. Maybe I can go to that party on Saturday night after all!

One year - a long, long time ago - the Rigg was too icy so they gave us a nice blast along the back roads to Somewhere (East Linton maybe), then another blast back along the coast to Musselburgh.
You can always hope.  ;)
It's a bit weird, but actually quite wonderful.

Now that you mention it, I'm sure you're right.

I'm getting worried about ice now.  I'm not a fan and I end up riding like a big jessie thinking I'm about to fall of at any second (just ask Craig or Alves).  I have two sets of tyres that fit my audax bike - my usual Michelin Pro2Race (25mm) and Vittoria Randonneurs (28mm) which have a tread.  Do you think the Vittorias be any safer for the conditions expected on Sunday?

I've been setting myself up for a DNS all week. I seem to be falling at the first hint of ice at the moment and TBH I'd rather have another week off the bike than 6 weeks enforced absence.  :-[

That's very much my thinking - I'm pretty terrified of ice. Like RJMcB (if I remember correctly?), I came off on ice once and it's given me big Fear of slippy stuff. I do not want broken bones....

I set off to ride in this morning and turned back, cause the roads were all slushy and snowy. If it's like this down here... but then the forecast says 9 degrees on Sunday, and sunny!

++++East Lothian Weatherwatch++++

Several inches of snow have fallen since 8am. Cars slipping and sliding about outside the window. Couple of people from Stenton and Morham have phoned to say they're snowed in. Even folk from the 'Pans are having trouble getting up the hill to Tranent.

It's still snowing

Snow that fell is melting at my location 70m above sea level.  Confident that it's on it's way, but might take my cleat pedals off so I can jump off in a hurry!

Why don't you all cancel and come into town and we'll all go for a pub lunch and a drink or three?
