Thanks chaps. Really enjoyed that. Shocking weather, but I've had worse. RR and pics when I get home tomorrow. Wind has eased now, but it's threatening rain again. Back at the tent now, drinking beer and eating a very good kebab.

I tried to wake you up but settled on stroking your hair and tucking you in.

I did spare a thought for all the hardy souls out in the British summertime today, inbetween stuffing my face at a barbecue.

Well done, anyone who rode this.

All done. Finished at 10.44 (I think). Had a few hours kip at the Travelodge before getting up at 05.00 and driving back home.

I was pretty tough. Despite reports re the wind, it was never that bad on the southward leg - I've had far worse (Invicta 300 last year springs to mind), but the rain! My God! I remember shouting at it on a number of occassions - made no difference.

I shall certainly take MVs advice and enter the 2004 next year as some of those steep, very long climbs (and descents) on tiny little lanes full of rainwashed debris were unpleasant. I did my fair share of walking!

Unfortunately, I am just not fast enough to enjoy the scenery as much as I would like - it becomes something of a head down slog in parts. Hopefully next year I will be fitter and lighter and hence faster. Having said that, it was stunningly beautiful.

Thanks to the organiser, helpers etc who were fantastic. Thanks to Greenbank and various others who I rode with during the event for great company. It was quite a drag having to leave you constantly as I turned off onto the scenic route to slog up some great hill. The hill out of Dollgelau springs to mind - who put that there?!?

A guy we rode with up the final climb kindly lent me 2 rechargeable batteries which I failed to return at the end. Never did catch his name but I think it may have been Mike? Anyway, if you read this PM me your address and I will send them back to you.

I may post a more full RR later.

Well done sir. (What time was the cutoff this year? at least 23-something I'm assuming. I could also guess at 3 mins after Iddu gets in :) )

Wot news of your comrades - GB, Paul Stewart ....? Anyone arrive after you? still missing?

I'm recovering now. Back at about 9:20.  When I left Bulwark after 10, there were still around 15 people out there, including my brother whom I saw briefly at Dolgellau on the return.  He'd punctured twice before he left Chepstow, and ridden 100 miles before he saw any other riders.  I'm sure he made it.  And does anyone know if Pippa Wheeler finished to complete her first 600 and SR?  She had quite a story to tell when I saw her at Dolgellau.

Scottlington's right about the wind - it was variable both in direction and force.  In fact one of the worst bits was outbound  where the route swings westward along the A44.  The one bit I remember where there was a sustained headwind was second part of the Cross Foxes (ie after Cross Foxes) climb after Dolgellau.  The descent was not enjoyable, trying to keep the front wheel pointing in the right direction.

Oh, and Scottlington's right about the rain too.  |I asked Mark if this ride could be worthy of the sobriquy 'the wet Chapman'.   No, apparently, just 'a wet Chapman' along with  ... and then he listed 4 or 5 other years this decade which also qualified.

More later perhaps, but in the meantime, hello MattH and thanks for pacing Miniog and myself back from Menai.  I did promise you a lack of sparking conversation, and I'm sure I delivered.  And also congrats to Bez who rode with us quite a lot after Aberhafesp, on his first 600 and SR.

23:15 (but Mark had to clear clear and lock the hall by 23:00 - I think he then does a sweep of Chepstow in his car looking for stragglers, and will accept, eg cash machine receipt).

Ride report short version

There was a lot of weather but Wales was beautiful as ever

Highlights for me

Tailwind out of Barmouth to Harlech,,40kph with no effort

Turning the corner after the A44 to go to Tre doll...suddenly we had a tailwind again and the sun came out!

Night section from Menai back to Kings...off coffee for a week+catch up on sleep+two pro plus at midnight+chocolate+trying to catch ChrisN on climb=no sleepiness, back before 3am

View across to mountains from A483 to the left first thing in the morning when it was briefly bright

Dry socks at Dollegellau first time and Menai...but then I ran out of dry socks. Drying room was great but drying waterproof socks in a few hours isn't possible!  More socks next time

All the people I rode with who had a positive attitude..Julez, Garry, Dave Bartlett, Louise, Hummers, Fidgetbuzz, ChrisN and the rest of you

I love Wales!  Great weekend

Cut off for me (scenic) was 23.04. GB finished. Not sure who Paul Stewart is - if he was the guy I referred to as Mike, then yes he finished too!

Cheeky - naw, Monmouth 21:45, but stayed with Swarmcatcher(?) as she grovelled up from Tintern; [Zen] it's only a ride, not like the points mean more than a finish.

I think it was Mel who I passed just after you told me to "fark off" when I passed you in the car  ;D just after the roundabout onto the A458.

Greenbank made it back with 15 minutes spare. I enjoyed a hearty breakfast with him, Fidgetbuzz and the Tunebulls jr and snr. Don't know about Manotea.

Now off to work to pretend to function normally.

That's good to hear, he was seriously thinking about packing at Kings and took a while to get going again  ;D

Manotea finished in time to sign and hand his brevet to Mark  I'd had a sleep after finishing and we were back in London by 03:00.

It was a toughie; the wind and especially the cold cold rain on Saturday evening and Sunday morning made it the worst conditions I've audax in. Spent 45 mins in pub (@10:00 so it was closed for beer) after Newtown with Peter Simon (scrap heap fixed) getting warm in front of a wood burning stove and also waited at  Weobly for weather to improve.

Special thanks to Tiggers taxi for use of his spare tyre after mine was badly cut on way to Harlech. See the PM Tigger.
