1/8" Chain and hub bolt recomndations
« on: 01 April, 2009, 12:56:54 pm »
I don't like my current chain, I think it's a bit nosy and well black looking! I'm looking to buy another one but nickle plated so I can see when it's getting grubby and I can notice when I clean it. Any suggestions.

Also, I have Halo hubs and the nuts have rusted to hell in less than 4 months, any suggestions for nuts that will not rust or at least last a little longer?

SRAM PC1-N (the N means nickel plated)

£10 usually (they stock them in my local Bikehut!).

There are two common sizes of nut - M10 (most likely) and 3/8" (less common) - so you'll need to find out which you've got.  Hubjub have Dura Ace M10 nuts, but struggled to get decent quality 3/8" nuts for me.  In the end, Will sent me some cheap chrome plated 3/8" nuts which are fine, but I don't expect the plating to last long.

They are M10, so Dura Ace could be a goer?

The chrome plated nuts are, IMHO, awful. They rust with a few weeks on a winter commute.

I think I'll pop off to see if Mr Hubjub has any Dura Ace in stock.
I'm fed up buying disposable shiny crap things

Your local fastener suppliers will probably sell stainless nuts.

Putney High St. They're also the only other place you can buy a Condor...

My LBS does not sell any "real" brand name bikes but it does focus on BMX stuff, which means pimpy gold KMC chains for a tenner, must...resist...

If you go to such a place remember the thread pitch is 1mm (or 26tpi for Campag. and some copies) so the usual M10 1.5 pitch nuts won't fit.

I've gone for a KMC Z510HX chain so will see what it's like when it turns up. Still waiting for Hubjub to restock on the Dura Ace bolts. It's nice having a bit of bling on the bike!

Good choice. I've been doing a bit of research on chains the past couple of days (ie reading reviews) as I needed a new chain myself, and those seem to come very highly recommended. I've just ordered it's 3/32 cousin, the Z610HX.

It'll be replacing a Gusset Slink halflink chain which has stretched to nearly 12.5" in about 4 months and less than 500 miles so I'll probably be needing a new chainring and sprocket too (I've ordered the chainring, I'll wait and see how it runs on the sprocket as that looks like it's still in pretty good knick). Not impressed though.

I've used these for a while and found them to be good until I found this.

(Apologies for bad quality phone camera image)

Chain is a nickel plated SRAM PC1-N, had maybe seen 200 miles. Bad show.

Well the new chain is on and to my surprise it's a good 1/2" shorter than it's replacement, and it's looks rather nice!

There is a bit of noise coming from the back now but I hope that will settle down over the next few hundred km as it's a fairly new cog, we shall see. If not it might be my excuse to invest in a nice shiny steel cog.

Still waiting for those Dura Ace bolts to come in stock.

The lengths we go to to have shiny, non-rusty, quite running bits on our bikes!

The trouble with the shiney SRAM chains is that they do not actualy absorb oil, it just sits on the surface and gets washed off.

I have the bog standard un-plated one and the plain case hardened carbon steel seems to absorb/hold oil and resist rust for longer.
