Some can, e.g. The Oddie and Victoria in Colchester. But it is increasingly rare. I think it depends on the owner's cost base. If they have high rents or mortgage payments to meet then they probably need revenue from food.
True I guess to an extent The Cats - Woodham Walter falls into that bracket too!
What I should have said is a pub/building of that size needs to have a gastro offer. As it stands with the Monkey they haven't got the whole building open. I believe the intention is to move the village shop to the big space at the back of the pub to as such create a 'village hub' with pub, shop, tearoom and surgery all together
