N+1 oldskool
« on: 04 May, 2008, 07:51:22 pm »

Built by Bill Whyte (a V-CC (oldbikes club) chap), it's a replica of a fairly early model.  50" wheel, weighs a ton.  In good-but-used condition - I bought it from a guy who runs circus shows and workshops for kids, who was selling it as it wasn't getting used, to raise funds for a stiltbike.  Obviously.  It needs a little fettling: the saddle needs work and the left crank needs a screw.  Otherwise it's ready to go!

I am a very happy bunny, in that "it shall be mine, oh yes, it shall be mine" way.
It takes blood and guts to be this cool but I'm still just a cliché.

Two observations:

1) That saddle angle is "challenging".

2) Proof that radial wheels can carry torque, sometimes. I've seen BMX bikes and low-riders with radial rear wheels; if you have sufficient spokes the wind-up is acceptable.
Hard work sometimes pays off in the end, but laziness ALWAYS pays off NOW.

The saddle's going to be replaced, probably, with a fabricated clamp and a Brooks.

The radial wheel was an early design.  It was actually quite prone to collapse - one of the reasons for the invention of the tangential-spoked wheel later.  However, this is made from modern materials and the previous owner was 17 stone, so I'm not losing sleep.

What's the gear?  60" was about as big as they came.

50" wheel, add an inch for the tyre, say 51".   The big end of the regular spread from 48-52.  With a cadence around 85, that's 14mph, I reckon, which is enough.

I could probably fit a wheel cover and pretend it was carbon, but I won't!

The fork is a slab of angle iron.  The tubular fork was another late innovation.

That's the plan.

If I don't do the Dun Run itself, it would be worth travelling up to Hackney just to see you with that magnificent machine.

You do realise that tweed plus-fours, deerstalker and meerschaum pipe are obligatory?  ;D

It's going to be "I wanna go!" at London Fields, isn't it?   ::-) :)

I'm thinking of packing a Lumi head into the carbide lamp.

Needs a Brooks.  Can someone recommend a good comfy wide one that you sit on - broader and more bumly than a B17?

B66 or B67 if you want big springs on it, otherwise B72.

Perhaps not, it was common then for spokes to be screwed into the hub (only one spoking pattern possible).
