East Sussex 24 hour 2011
« on: 30 August, 2009, 04:43:55 pm »
I have just read on the Lewes Wanderers website that East Sussex CA have confirmed that they will hold a 24 hour time trial over the 25th and 26th of June 2011.

Do they have a route yet?
There has been talk of a southern 24 for about 5 years now, to my knowledge, but finding a suitable course was always the biggest setback. I heard that it's almost sorted at the beginning of this year.

Interesting choice of dates - long enough before PBP, but a bit close to possible 600k quallies.

Also:
+ Plenty of daylight.
- South-east saturday night drivers...

The other obvious date options would be late August, roughly the same time as PBP. Well, that is if they want people to ride both 24 hours. The Mersey 24 will still be ran too at the end of July.
There was no trouble that I know of on the Brighton Mitre 24 hour in 1999 that I know of. That one even went through Haywards Heath town centre at around midnight.

hot off the press;

"I know that there are 250 odd miles in East Sussex and 250 odd miles in West Sussex. Night HQ is in Ashurst and day HQ is at Berwick"

They have a website

This looks exciting, it's suitably close to some people I could possibly lean on for support.

Interested. (although I'm more likely to have a return bash at the Mersey version).

What is a "ROUND-A-BOUT " ?

Mr B:
Support?!? It's only 24hours  ::-)

That does sound rather fun!  How welcoming are events like this towards more "casual" riders?

I assume the best way to practice for this (apart from doing some ~24 hour rides...) would be a 12h TT?  Any reasonably newbie-friendly examples in the south/southeast?

Very - see discussion of Mersey 24h over past 2 editions.

Well I'd say riding a 400k Audax is more useful (or a 600, dunno how fast you are) - the time and night riding are the tricky bits.
(EDIT: just reread your post, we may be saying the same thing!)

I believe 12H TT are also pretty welcoming, because like the 24s they don't fill up (but avoid national champs, I guess). I haven't done one, so this is all hearsay ...

CTT site lists all the 12H events.

Thanks mattc, that's all pretty encouraging!

400k audaxes -- plus one or two longer ones -- definitely seem like the best way to get the miles in beforehand.  I suppose I'm more concerned about preparing for the ways an event like this differs from an audax.

Yup, I went through the same thoughts in 2008. There are two main things:
- riding a lot on the flat. You may go for an optimised position (i.e. tribars and so forth), and you'll need to know you can ride thus for many hours. I tried mine out on a 600!

- other miscellaneous stuffs:
Where is food/drink available, where do I put my number, how do I enter, can I use my MP3 player ? ...etc ... etc ...

Both areas were discussed on the Mersey threads 08/09, so read those first.

[I really do think most Audaxers were better prepared for the 24H than those coming from a "Time Trial background" ... </sweeping generalisation>   ]

I appear to have been talked into doing this (although I will probably get disqualified for not trying: 360 miles would be nice but unlikely)

can someone confirm that it is eligible for AUK points?

Yes, though you must claim them, as per the Mersey Roads 24

I've never caimed AUK points for the Mersey 24, but have always got points when I've ridden.

This was discussed at the time, but basically when I rode, some nice man at AUK (with an interest in the 24) put us all in the system

Only if he recognises the names on the finish list as AUKs.

I don't think he'll have much problem recognising me as an AUK; I'll be the slow one with mudguards and a computer in kms

BTW is there a minimum distance we have to cover to get points?

Think it's 360km (i.e. 15kph). Mentioned on your other thread, in fact, IIRC.

As I keep saying, it's the easiest* 400 not in the calendar! (although even I managed 500)

*On the Mersey course, anyways. This may be harder, but not too bad.

it's not that bad from what I've heard'

ps do you have to finish the 24 hrs to get the points?  boredom looks like being the biggest issue; I'm bored of the A22 after 3 ECE's to Hailsham

He isn't going to see your mudguards by looking at a list of names.

Mersey Roads CC sends a finish list to the AUK Recorder because AUK recognises the event. If the East Sussex organisers would do the same then points will be recorded automatically. Someone who knows them might mention it.
