Up the 'Uts
« on: 30 March, 2008, 07:02:29 pm »
ACFers used to doing the odd Audax are no doubt familiar with The 'Uts - a small hamlet of bungalows near Ugley, owned by such august organisations as the Victoria, the Shaftstbury and the Comrades' Cycling Clubs. These bungalows offer basic sleeping accommodation, fully equipped kitchens, and some of the finest gentle cycling country to be found in England.

Most importantly, they can be hired by the night.

A few of us have put our heads together and come up with a Cunning Plan: we want an ACF weekend Up the 'Uts. For approximately £5 per person per night, we can hire the Shaftesbury and Victoria 'Uts. (The Victoria requires a £25 donation then it's £5 per head) I have made enquiries and the two huts concerned are both available on the weekend of 8th - 10th August. Depending on the response, I will hire one or both huts. I have already provisionally booked the Shaftesbury because enough people have expressed an interest. It sleeps 12. There are mattresses, but you will need to bring your own sleeping bag / duvet / teddy bear. The Victoria Hut is a similar size. Both huts have the necessary loos & showers.

My idea for the weekend is just have fun with cycling. The sort of thing I have in mind:-

Friday 8th: ride there, or get the train, or drive.

Sat. 9th. A nice ride somewhere for a pub lunch. If we get two huts full, an ACF Rounders Match would be a great laugh. An evening meal of some sort - maybe on the way back.

Sunday 10th: another shorter ride for a pub lunch, followed by a pootle home again.

There are plenty of pubs around: the Chequers is nearest. Liz, Charlotte and I can vouch for the quality of the food & beer. The Cock Inn, Henham, has to be explored thoroughly, and of course there are pubs in Newport, Elsenham and Stansted Mountfitchet.

All of the above is merely an example of what we might get up to. What we need now is people. So, folks, if you are up for the ultimate in silliness, sign below!

Well, that's 15 16 18 19 names who are either committed or should be. I reckon it's time to confirm the booking of the second hut. Still space for more.

*Provisionally, based upon us not being weird.

I think Erron mentioned at the other place that we will be arriving by boat at Harwich that weekend and would be interested in saying hello and maybe stopping for a night.

No need to take beds from the needy though, as we will be in possession of tents...
Those wonderful norks are never far from my thoughts, oh yeah!

This looks fun, I'd be interested.

But it's my one and only sister's birthday on the 10th, so I'll have to check what she's got planned. Will let you know.

What a thought! My little sister is the only person I know who has actually forgotten how to ride a bike. And she hates me riding mine.

A text has revealed she will be across the pond on holiday at that time, so I'd find it a bit difficult to spend her birthday with her this year.

Well as it's only a short (21 mile) ride from here, I really ought to add my name to the list.

If there is a shortage of space I have tent (sleeps 1 comfortably, 2 less so).

Might be forced to bring the Galaxy as my steed if I have tent though.  Which will slow me down tremendously of course.

Judging by the BCM you might want to deflate the tyres a bit as well if the rest of us are to keep up. ;)

Arse, just noticed this thread, and quite fancied it, but looking at my calendar, I realised that I promised to cat sit that weekend, and I don't think he'd appreciate being left by himself for three days!  I'd probably come back to a shredded house. ;D
Actually, it is rocket science.

I will now be in the middle of a 2 week vacation in the United States of Merka when this event takes place.

We'd be delighted with the company of Teethgrinder, but I think we need a vote as to whether we'll grant Fatters leave of absence! ;)

Say hello to my sister FatBloke  ;D

Mr Teethgrinder, you had better be planning a bath sometime between now and Norfolk, that's all I can say  ::-) :P Or you will be sleeping outside. But you'd probably enjoy that.  ;D

Don't forget we mentioned bikinis, plastic bags and fairy liquid before, or was it a paddling pool filled with chocolate?
