Time is running out - Muse.
Apart from the obvious title, some of the lyrics seem quite appropriate in my experience.

I think I'm drowning, asphyxiated
I wanna break this spell that you've created
You're something beautiful, a contradiction
I wanna play the game, I want the friction

You will be the death of me
Yeah, you will be the death of me
Bury it, I won't let you bury it
I won't let you smother it
I won't let you murder it

Our time is running out
Our time is running out

You can't push it underground
You can't stop it screaming out

I wanted freedom, bound and restricted
I tried to give you up but I'm addicted
Now that you know I'm trapped, sense of elation
You'd never dream of breaking this fixation

You will squeeze the life out of me
Bury it, I won't let you bury it
I won't let you smother it
I won't let you murder it

Our time is running out
Our time is running out
You can't push it underground
You can't stop it screaming out

How did it come to this?

Actually, I'm suddenly convinced that the Flaming Lips' A Soft Bulletin is a concept album about audaxing. Check out these titles:

Race for the Prize
Slow Motion
Feeling Yourself Disintegrate
Sleeping on the Roof
Race for the Prize (again)

For international events.

Any Audax in Flanders;' Pack all your troubles in your old kit bag'.

Audax Ireland; 'It's a long way to Tipperary'.

For an Arrow in the US Midwest; '24 Hours from Tulsa'.

Interesting, not sure I'd ever want to attend an Audax UK Disco though  ;)

Scotty - 'Draw your brakes' is my choice (Reggae / Rock Steady tune from The Harder They Come Soundtrack), it's not actually the title that does it for me, it's the 'Stop That Train, I wanna get on, I can't even hold the back of the train' lyrics that resonate as those faster riders disappear in to the distance.

Towards the end of a ride I always end up with Edwin Starr's '25 Miles' in  my head. It's actually about a guy walking, but it counts the miles down.

Finally, one of the earlier suggestions was Black Box, 'Ride on Time'.....not wishing to sound picky, oh hell, yes I am being picky, but that record is a sample of Loleatta Holloway's 'Love Sensation' and she's actually singing 'Right on Time'.

LEE MARVIN WAND'RIN' STAR

I was born under a wandrin' star
I was born under a wandrin' star
Wheels are made for rolling, mules are made to pack
I've never seen a sight that didn't look better looking back
I was born under a wandrin' star
Life can make you prisoner and the plains can bake you dry
Snow can burn your eyes, but only people make you cry
Home is made for coming from, for dreams of going to
Which with any luck will never come true
I was born under a wandrin' star
I was born under a wandrin' star
Do I know where hell is, hell is in hello
Heaven is goodbye forever, its time for me to go
I was born under a wandrin' star
A wandrin' wandrin' star
(Life can make you prisoner and the plains can bake you dry)
(Snow can burn your eyes, but only people make you cry)
(Home is made for coming from, for dreams of going to)
(Which with any luck will never come true)
(I was born under a wandrin' star)
(I was born under a wandrin' star)
When I get to heaven, tie me to a tree
For I'll begin to roam and soon you'll know where I will be
I was born under a wandrin' star
A wandrin' wandrin' star

Ah Edwin Starr; '25 miles'. This song came into my head at the last control on my first ever audax 200k. The controller signed my card and said "You're ok now you've only 40k left, 25 miles to go to the finish."
So I set off on the last leg singing to my self ; "Come on feet start moving, 25 miles to go now ." Seemed apt at the time.!

I first used '25 Miles' in a video in 2003 in a film about the Daylight 600, about 5.17 in, 'Roadrunner' as well and the intro to 'Trouble Man'.

I've always liked 'They call the Wind Maria'. This is actual footage from the Eskdalemuir control on LEL 2009. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ByqYEzugleE

GRANDMASTER FLASH (& the furious five)

White Lines (Don't Don't Do It)

Aaah, aaah, aaah, aaah)
Uhraah!
Bass!

Ooh White, White
Ooh White, White
Ooh White, White

(Ooh White Lines) Vision dreams of passion
(Blowin' through my mind) and all the while I think of you
(High fry) a very strange reaction
(For us to unwind) the more I see, the more I do
(Something like a phenomenon) Baby!
(Tellin your body to come along, but white lines blow away)
(Blow! Rock it! Blow!)

Ticket to ride, white line highway
Tell all your friends, they can go my way
Pay your toll, sell your soul
Pound for pound costs more than gold
The longer you stay, the more you pay
My white lines go a long way
Either up your nose or through your vein
With nothin to gain except killin' your brain

(Freeze! Rock! Freeze! Rock! Freeze! Rock! Freeze! Rock!)
(Blow!)

(Ahhh) Higher, baby
(Ahhh) Get higher, baby!
(Ahhh) Get higher, baby!
And don't ever come down! (Freebase!)

Rang dang diggedy dang di-dang
Rang dang diggedy dang di-dang
Rang dang diggedy dang di-dang
Diggedy dang di-dang diggedy dang di-dang

(Pipeline) pure as the driven snow
(Connected to my mind) and now I'm havin' fun, baby!
(High fry) it's getting kinda low
(Cause it makes you feel so nice) I need some one-on-one, baby!
(Don't let it blow your mind away) Baby!
(And go into your little hideaway 'cause white lines blow away)
(Blow! )

A billion magic crystals, painted pure and white
A multi-million dollars almost overnight
Twice as sweet as sugar, twice as pretty as salt
And if you get hooked, baby, it's nobody else's fault, so don't do it!

(Freeze! Rock! Freeze! Rock! Freeze! Rock! Freeze! Rock!)
Raah! (Blow!)

(Ahhh) Higher, baby
(Ahhh) Get higher, baby!
(Ahhh) Get higher, baby!
And don't ever come down! (Freebase!)

(Don't you get too high) don't you get too high baby!
(Turns you on) you really turn me on and on
(When you gonna come down) my temperature is risin'
(When the thrill is gone) no, I don't want you to go

A street kid gets arrested, gonna do some time
He got out three years from now just to commit more crime
A businessman is caught with 24 kilos
He's out on bail and out of jail
And that's the way it goes
Raah!

(Kane! Sugar! Kane! Sugar! Kane!)

Athletes rejected, governors corrected
Gangsters, thugs and smugglers are thoroughly respected
The money gets divided
The women get excited
Now I'm broke and it's no joke
It's hard as hell to fight it, don't buy it!

(Freeze! Haha ha ha! Rock! Freeze! Rock! Freeze! Rock! Freeze! Rock!)
Raah! (Blow!)

(Ahhh) Get higher, baby
(Ahhh) Get higher, girl!
(Ahhh) Get higher, baby!
C'mon!
Raah!

(White Lines) Vision dreams of passion
(Blowin' through my mind) and all the while I think of you
(High Fry) a very strange reaction
(For us to unwind) the more I see, the more I do
(Something like a phenomenon) Baby!
(Tellin your body to come along, but white lines blow away)

Little Jack Horner sitting on the corner
With no shoes and clothes
This aint funny, but he took his money
And sniffed it up his nose

(Hey man, you wanna cop some blow?)
(Sure, what you got, dust, flakes or rocks?)
(I got China White, Mother of Pearl, Ivory Flake, What you need?)
(Well yeah, well let me check it out man, just let me get a freeze)
(Go ahead man, stuff I got should kill ya!)
(Yeah man th-that's that's raw, wuh)

(Freeze! Haha ha ha! Rock! Freeze! Rock! Freeze! Rock!
Freeze! Rock! Freeze! Rock! Freeze! Rock!)

I tend to default to The Levellers "Beautiful Day" when out on an audax, especially if the weather is rotten.

A song that makes me think of 400km events instantly when I hear it is "Bend & Break" by Keane.

If only I don't bend and break
I'll meet you on the other side
I'll meet you in the light
If only I don't suffocate
I'll meet you in the morning when you wake

Step aside Grand Master and take a chill pill!  :o
Next tune to calm it all down fellow Audax disco fans is...

CAT STEVENS   Natasha Marsh

Morning has broken

Morning has broken, like the first morning
Blackbird has spoken, like the first bird
Praise for the singing, praise for the morning
Praise for the springing fresh from the world

Sweet the rain's new fall, sunlit from heaven
Like the first dewfall, on the first grass
Praise for the sweetness of the wet garden
Sprung in completeness where his feet pass

Mine is the sunlight, mine is the morning
Born of the one light, eden saw play
Praise with elation, praise every morning
God's recreation of the new day

( at the top of Cheddar Gorge- Brimstone 600 ) ;)

I'm sure Yusuf Islam would want a proper attribution.
Quote
"Morning Has Broken" is a popular and well-known Christian hymn first published in 1931. It has words by English author Eleanor Farjeon and is set to a traditional Scottish Gaelic tune known as "Bunessan"
The Rick Wakeman piano part is original.

Just a warning that you've now opened a portal to the whole religious and classical repertoire.
Lord Behold us with Thy Blessing, being ideal for the start of a long ride. We've got a few clerics around, so we may be subjected to hymn numbers. That one was 333 at school.

Quote
Lord, behold us with thy blessing,
once again assembled here;
onward be our footsteps pressing,
in thy love and faith and fear;
: still protect us, :
: by thy presence ever near. :

For thy mercy we adore thee,
for this rest upon our way;
Lord, again we bow before thee,
speed our labors day by day;
: mind and spirit, :
: with thy choicest gifts array. :

Keep the spell of home affection
still alive in every heart;
may its power, with mild direction,
draw our love from self apart,
: till thy children, :
: feel that thou their Father art. :

Schiller via Beethoven might be more inclusive to the non-religious.

Quote
47 Laufet, Brueder, eure Bahn,
48 Freudig wie ein Held zum Siegen.
49 Aus der Wahrheit Feuerspiegel
50 Laechelt sie den Forscher an.
51 Zu der Tugend steilem Huegel
52 Leitet sie des Dulders Bahn.
53 Auf des Glaubens Sonnenberge
54 Sieht man ihre Fahnen wehn,

Some songs suggest a specific narrative. This one seems to be about a 400 in Kent, he's been dropped early on, possibly a mechanical. His partner has gone on with the main group, and he's now considering using google maps to answer the information control question.

Quote
Many rivers to cross
But I can't seem to find my way over
Wandering I am lost
As I travel along the white cliffs of dover

Many rivers to cross
And it's only my will that keeps me alive
I've been licked, washed up for years
And I merely survive because of my pride

And this loneliness won't leave me alone
It's such a drag to be on your own
My woman left me and she didn't say why
Well, I guess I'll have to cry

Many rivers to cross

But just where to begin I'm playing for time
There have been times I find myself
Thinking of committing some dreadful crime

Yes, I've got many rivers to cross
But I can't seem to find my way over
Wandering, I am lost
As I travel along the white cliffs of Dover

Yes, I've got many rivers to cross
And I merely survive because of my will...

That song might suit the confused state of mind of the tired rider off course - I don't think there are many (if any) rivers that come out on the white cliffs of Dover.  A case of the words written for the sound rather than their sense - like most pop music!

I know there's a Half Man Half Biscuitbreference somewhere in this thread but Google search cannot find it, because Google search is a big pile of poo.  Anyway, I offer the first verse of "Our Tune".
