That's just dripping in purest, liquid WIN

If it's a material applied to the outside of a regular component, presumably we can expect whole frames to be coated and lit up in the same way?

That's a piece of EL sheet carefully wrapped and sealed round a standard seatpost.  I suspect that coating a component would be tricky - though it could be done.  It'd need some pretty careful multilayer powder coating with some wacky materials.  Not yer standard Vaz job, for sure.

It's amazing though.  Really, really impressive.

You could do EL Decals for the frame, and EL Handlebar tape:D

The red EL stuff I have tried ended up rather Pink  :-\

Isn't there a word for someone out of whose bottom the sun shines?

I want one five.  No, make that six, as the tandem needs two.

Note how he needs to invert the batteries to AC, I wonder what sort of current it draws as how many of us have a pernament 6V ac supply in our front wheels?

The wire that Surelight sell appears to run on a AAA or AA battery pack-cum-inverter, which looks to be about 60x60x60mm.

I'm looking forward to seeing what arrives from them and testing how long it lasts on a set of batteries...

You should have had one of those for last year's Dun Run, Andy - would have gone a treat with your wheels

Damn, damn, I can't see the pictures from work.  I love weird light set-ups.

Most relieved to read that!  For the moment I was wildly imagining some sort of glass fluorescent tube and nothing else ....  :o :o :o

I believe EL lights are fairly efficient, energy wise - more so than LEDs of the same brightness - so the battery should give plenty of hours on one charge.  But the light emitting component has only a limited overall lifetime, and will progressively get dimmer as it reaches the end of its working life.  Once that happens there is no remedy other than to replace it.

It looks great, but how does it work? What exactly is electroluminescence?

And hole scavenging.  Let the drift to NWS begin here.

Basically it's cold and bright and flexible, and because it's encapsulated in plastic, the glowy stuff is reasonably waterproof (just wrap the connectors in tape).

Just wondering whether we could get some yACF logos done in EL sheets...

For real ease just black out the stuff you want to hide.  Slip the EL sheet into a clear case along with a printed acetate...

Brilliant implementation :) I was going to do something similiar on artemis whe I first got her, red on the back of the wings (afterburners FTW!) Using EL is easy, I've got/had stupid ammounts of the stuff on Beatrix and it is indeed silly efficient, I think all of my combined lights including LEDS were taking 0.3amps.

You can paint using EL, it's look fantastic on a whole frame, trouble is sealing the layers, which would be a bit of a hazard when it came to stuff that rubs, ie drop outs, anywhere there's somethings screwing in/bolting on so it wouldn't be ideal :(

I've got one of their first gen bike kits; they sent it to me to use on on the C+ Christmas ride back in '03! The pack I had ran off a rectangular 9V battery and they apparently now run off the standard round ones. I seem to remember that it lasted most of the evening. The battery box was about the size of a fag packet.
