Pretty much the same thing happened to me while working a summer in Oslo! Was struck on my right side next to the zebra lines of a crossing for pedestrians! The car was a Ford Mondeo doing over 50km/h on a small road through a residential area, were the speed limit was 30, so I was quite lucky to survive!
Resulted in a couple of broken bones in my right foot, bruises, a severe concussion and a three line article in the town's major paper.
The protruding side channel leading water away from the windscreen to the roof sliced my Sub-6 helmet clean through. As I had lost consciousness on impact I was later told by the driver I lay twitching on the ground before the ambulance arrived.
The Mondeo on the other hand was a write-off and had to be towed to the scrapheap. The front, hood and roof was badly dented and the front window shattered and pushed into the drivers compartment! The bastard later visited me to change the notes about witch speed he had done in the insurance papers, as he discovered that he was in fact speeding quite a bit!
When I got the verdict that I was to blame, I had not payed attention to his right of passage, I told the insurance company the true story and heard nothing more 'bout it! Norwegian health insurance is quite generous so my loss of work wasn't to bad after all.
EDIT: Like to ad that I was just heading down to the post office to cash my first paycheck and almost left the helmet at home. In hindsight I'm very grateful that plain routine took overhand and that it was placed on my head without thinking!
I often think back on this incident and never leave home without it.
One may be worlds best cyclist, but fate pay very little attention to this when you have to interact with motorist...
