What to do with a tonne of soil?
« on: 28 February, 2010, 04:22:51 pm »
I've just put in four big raised beds in the back garden, but due to a mis-estimation I have bought a tonne of soil more than I need to fill them?

An suggestions of what I can do with a tonne of soil?

It's still in a bulk bag, perhaps there is some ingenious way I can grow something useful in it.

Sew some little bags that go inside your pockets...

It is simpler than it looks.

save some to top up the raised beds when they settle.

Charlotte's answer is not that silly actually - it's surprising how much soil you can get rid of by spreading round the garden in a thin layer...

... unless you've converted all of it to raised beds.

Raise the beds higher?

If you really have no use for it, freecycle the stuff.  Soil's a desirable commodity.
It takes blood and guts to be this cool but I'm still just a cliché.

Tis not a tonne it's about 850kg

It's a cubic meter of topsoil, work out your coverage and see how much you can spread out in the beds, start a new compost bin with the left overs.

Soil's a desirable commodity.

's true acksherly.  We need some more for our garden to fill up our tubs.  I may have to go out in the middle of the night with the trailer...

Sad thing is, I regularly flush away veggie scraps and teabags down the waste disposal.
Planning permission for our apartment block did include composting facilities, which were roundly ignored. At least with the cycle parking they paid lip service and put in useless wheelbender stand on bolts with the nits exposed which you can kick out anyway.

And me living next to a city farm - I am suitably ashamed.

I'll gladly relieve you of your soil burden, if Ms B doesn't get there first with her trailer. Good soil is valuable stuff.

Yeah, that is the slight snag in the plan.

Looks like the raised beds might eat it up after all.  Beds 1 and 2 have settled a few cm, and we dug the bottom of bed 3 out a bit deeper so it's not totally full yet. The rest should be good for some containers in the front.
