Although, and I realise that this flies in the face of the perception of the ludditism of audaxers, some riders do own some very technically advanced phones that could be used to look up answers.

You don't need a very advanced phone. Street view runs on google maps on a 'bog standard' Nokia N95 or Sony Ericsson W whatever, you just need a data plan. And at £20 for 6 months unlimited data on T-Mobile, that's pretty accessible too these days

(Hmm IIRC there maybe some limitation with zooming in on non-touch screen phones. That would limit its usefulness. Guess I could send a patch for that  ;))

Any idea why pretty much the whole of Europe has been done, but not the republic of Ireland?

One of the advantages of having a distinctive bike.  If anyone finds someone riding a red Kettwiesel in the North of Scotland, it's almost certainly me.

The canny organiser will pick info controls that

(a) are unreadable from Streetview (easy for them to check)
(b) have changed since the Streetview images were taken

It may be easy to cheat to get the name of the pub, but that was the name of the pub back in 2008 or whenever the Google car drove past.

Or you may miss out on very recent changes. The sign containing the answer to the info control on the Upper Thames in 2007 was tricky to answer as the sign (that would be pointing to the right) went missing in the week after Phil had routechecked it.

Providing the correct answer would have been a little suspicious...

Ireland objected on privacy grounds...

Though it may have been more to do with the fact that there are still very active armed groups in the more remote areas, who might not want you seeing what they're up to.

Well I do regularly travel to the more remote border areas of the republic, and I have been known to use guns from time to time (purely for entertainment), but I haven't objected.

But according to this
I think StreetView is amazing BUT they seem to have kept it at bay in Germany.  Can anybody else get it to work over there? Much of the rest of Europe seems to be covered.

The blue areas show where streetview is available, so although most of Britain is covered it is nowhere near everywhere.

NB. The forum has a maximum image size limit so click here to see the image.
they havent' done most of Europe yet, only a few parts of Western Europe and Scandinavia. Almost all of Germany has yet to be done, for instance.

Today I passed right alongside Dicky Mo...

He's too big to completely capture with my camera directly alongside him.

Not streetview, but related.

Mrs. Wow came in from walking the dog just now and wanted a nose at the estate agent's blurb on this house.

The decor is really tasteless in places, but there's a pedestrian in view through this window.

Who's that then? :D
