Redshift on the Road - Coast to Coast the Hard Way. . .
« on: 03 June, 2008, 11:36:15 pm »
May I just take this opportunity to give a big shout to Redshift who will tomorrow commence a 3-day excursion.

Coast to Coast. Whitby to Whitehaven. Over Tan Hill.

RESPECT!

I'm sure that she will treat us  to piccies and a ride report along with a critique of camp sites and pub meals.

Big up, Liz. Wish I was going with you.

Tan Hill is very high - I understand that it boasts the highest pub in Britain.

Mrs. Wow and I are intending to ride over this when we are Up That Way in July.

Good luck to Redshift.

Me too, it'll be a cracking route, some of England's best cycling country IMO. Good luck.

Just received a brief update from Liz.

'At Kildale for overnight stop. Whitby to Kildale only 25-30 miles but most of today has been spent GETTING to Whitby. Camped in a well equipped, beautiful farm site with showers and cooking facilities.
Lumpy roads - 20% in at least one place - Commondale.Surrounded by sheep. Tomorrows ride across the Vale of York.
Tomorrows stop is at Brompton-on-Swale or Reeth, not decided yet.'

While she was telling me this she was being hassled by a 6 month old labrador pup and the all pervading background noise was sheep.

I'm still jealous...

Update received at Mission Control @ 17:20

'Just landed at Reeth. Odo shows 71.5 miles from Whitby.
Arkengarthdale looks scary. All it seems to do is go UP!
Off to shower & pitch tent & make supper'

It seems like she may be pushing the bike a little tomorrow. Hey Ho!

Don't blame her a bit. Check out Tan Hill on Google Earth.

I can usually see Arndale Hill on my commute, but sadly it's a bit misty this morning, so the views from Arkengarthdale & Tan Hill might be a bit reduced.

Still a cracking ride - deserted heathland, hills, corncrakes and curlews and lapwings...not to mention the drop down into Kirkby Stephen :)

Tonight's update as follows.

'Stopped just outside Penrith, just eating dinner. It's been a long day with a hard climb up and over Tan Hill, racing against Yorkshire's finest 'suicide sheep'. Up and down very fast thru' Brough. Appleby was hell due to the horse fair. On course to finish tomorrow, hopefully'
