Bricked AA1 - can I recover files from the SSD?
« on: 16 September, 2010, 12:04:31 am »
My Aspire One is doing the black screen of death thing (see here - Aspire One Black Screen of Death | Eric.Chromick.com

However, whilst I can successfully update the bios, it still hangs halfway through loading linpus. I could see if reinstalling linpus fixes it, but there are some files on the machine that I need (or rather my wife needs - please don't mention the need to back up files - I do). A mate suggested seeing if I could use linux on a pendrive. Sure enough, xubuntu loads up fine, but I can't get to the SSD (not listed under places), and ones on the flash expansion are all covered with a lock symbol when I navigate to them, and the folders appear empty.

Let me say, I am just about at the level of opening terminal and pasting in stuff I don't understand - ie rubbish at this stuff. Any help would be very welcome.

The lock symbol and seemingly empty folders is because you have'nt got the right permissions for those folders.
It is simpler than it looks.
