Last week I took some similar photos - not of me but of some club mates for the Dundee Cyclists fundraising calendar.

Getting the right light and pose was a challenge, but we got there. The one for the calendar is one of the local firemen - the other two were for the guys themselves (they had posed for a different picture.)

The calendar pic is now my co-conspirators screen saver, or so she claims.

Top tip - remember the baby wipes.

The original Lance photo appeared in the December 1999 edition of Vanity Fair so I suspect it predates your WNBR photo.

Good! But outdone by Leeds University Potholing Club calendar, for which all the photos were taken deep underground in streamways and under waterfalls. Admittedly the subjects kept their wellies and helmets and lights on but the number of takes in freezing water to ensure that you couldn't quite see anything showed immense dedication. The equivalent cycling calendar would be mountain biking in the Pennines. In February. At night. In the rain. When I see that, then I'll doff my hat - and probably eat it also.
