I remember recording coverage of the 1996 track meet at Manchester (Chris Boardman was riding, so the local news wanted coverage), and ISTR one of the female sprint riders was pinned to the edge of the track by a huge splinter in the thigh/glute after a crash.  It made that one look like a toothpick.  Cue many paramedics and officials with blankets and cutting equipment to free her and take her away for treatment.  I think she was Italian.

Jason Queally also came a cropper with a splinter at Manchester.

Jason Queally's "splinter" was Meadowbank. I was there on the Saturday, watching, but the crash happened on Sunday. It was my turn to represent the club at the ESCA meeting the following week and I got to hear about the aftermath - the organisers went to visit him in hospital, very worried that he'd try and sue them!
