Car hire for over 75 YO
« on: 08 April, 2011, 08:36:14 pm »
My Mum and Dad are coming over from USA in the Summer.

They've just been informed by the travel agent that car hire is not available to over 75's.

Is this correct. If so, does anyone know a way around this? Dad has even said he's prepared to take a test if this helps.

He has a bad left leg, so can't use a clutch - which rules our cars out.

Buy an auto at the auctions and flog it privately afterwards?

Contact SAGA.  They have a helpline that can give all sorts of advice on issues like this.

Could it be that the travel agent has it wrong?

I had a quick look at Enterprise (picked at random). The only mention they have of age limitations is young drivers.

Experienced the same 75 year cut-off with my American father in law a few years ago. Phoned all the national chains and various local car hire companies without success.

No offense meant but, 75 years old, gammie leg, driving on the wrong side of the road, I think I will stay in.

Gammy leg is why he will drive an automatic.

He learned to drive in UK, and has driven here freqently since living in USA.

No more of a risk than any other elderly driver. Much less of a risk than many young (and not so young) drivers.
