That does leave a worryingly large amount of time for beer and chips....

Could always carry on through Aldwark to the Crown in Great Ouseburn. I've not been there myself but SWMBO rates it, especially in the food stakes.

Depends on what you're looking for in terms of 'total' mileage - I'm sure I'll be able to think of something (and if a certain Mr. Boswell is free, I might drag him along too)

I'd prefer a loop to somewhere not-too-far away, bearing in mind that we've trains to catch.

Aye, bring Gerry along.  He's good company.

The way we did it last time worked well-20odd miles to a pub 6 miles from the station.

Btw, who wants a cake?

Well, far be it from me to upset the status quo.
Someone pick a destination and sort out a route and I'll go with the flow.

yebbut - you know the nice way to places!  I was wondering if we could cook up a cunning plan whereby we take a wiggly 20-ish mile route to Newton-on-Ouse, where I've never visited the pub which combined with recommendations seems like as good a reason as any to go there.  And then the straightforward 10 or so back to the station?

Although it has occurred to me that whilst you're back on the bike \o/ I don't know if your back is properly functional again, or if you're still having to take it very steady.  If the latter I would far rather do the shorter run and have you come along and not hurt your back.

I'll see what I can come up with - a route out via Haxby, Wigginton and Shipton presents itself, so I'll run it through the routeamajig tonight and see what pops out. Unfortunately, when heading out towards Newton/Linton, the river tends to get in the way a bit. Also, the Haxby Road route has the advantage of the underpass below the A1237

As for a straight run back, that's easy - if there's enough light and it's not too wet then we can come back via the cycle-track by the river. Failing that, back roads to Overton and then the cycle-track by the A19 from Skelton, through Rawcliffe and back to the station. This is about 11 miles.

I'm mobile in the sense that I can push a 71" gear with minimal discomfort rather than gut-wrenching agony so providing I take things steady and not go haring off up hills(!) then I'll be fine.

EDIT: We have a possible route: York -> Haxby -> Strensall -> Sutton-on-the-Forest -> Huby -> Tollerton -> Newton-on-Ouse. 21 miles pretty much on the dot, and then back to York via the quasi-direct route. How's that?

We got your route right here:

21.15 miles and 118m ascent(!)

No way. Got to be a mistake. I'd have said you couldn't manage more than 11m ascent on that route.

That looks good to me.

Interzen, a very important question.  I know that cake in anything other than miniscule quantities is verboten.  Where do you stand on the subject of cheese scones?

Like everything else, cake is fine in moderation although anything with raisins and sultanas is a no-no, mainly because I just don't like them. Cake+riding=not bad. Cake+being an idle fat bastard=not so good.

My stance on cheese scones can be summed up by the word 'gimme!' - I likes a good cheese scone, I does.

Incidentally, if anyone wants the GPX track of the proposed route out to Newton-on-Ouse, let me know  ;D

Not necessarily. Note that he said "proposed" route. We can all rest assured in the knowledge that the actual route will be anything but that one. All he's done is reduce the nmber of possible routes from infinity to infinity - 1

Hmmm.... that's a point.  Does it have a comedy off-road section or any bridges?

I'm sure they can be introduced. Arn't they a standard requirement these days?

Could be arranged - could go along Plainville Track to Huby.
Not 'technical' off-road, but it does have a surface which falls into the 'interesting' category. Bridges? Tons of those round here - no need to go looking. Where d'you think most of the 118m of climb in my proposed route comes from ;)

I may have to bail on this.
I've got a couple of cracked fillings and I've managed to snag a dentists appointment tomorrow evening to get them seen to. As such, I'm not sure how long the appointment will last, to say nothing of how much it is likely to cost me (apart from the obvious 'a lot')

Kind of a pity, since I'm likely to be much faster than usual on account of having a significantly lightened wallet(!). It also doesn't help that tomorrow's weather forecast looks bloody awful.

Watch this space ...

That's a pity, Simon.  Damn teeth.  don't get me started.

Hope you can make it - though the weather forecast does look exciting!

PAH! 28mph winds, is that all? We had 48mph+ here the other night, hard enough getting out the front door, nevermind getting out on the bike!

Ah buggrit.

Hang on.

Does that mean I'm meant to know where we're going?

Double buggrit.

Great, isn't it?
The one time that I finally feel ready for a decent ride I end up having to go and get my gob fixed. Since the affected teeth were root canal'd years ago I'm not in any physical pain, but you can bet I'll be in considerable financial discomfort in fairly short order  :-\

Having said that, I'm house-sitting for SWMBO this weekend so may well get the chance to take OrangeGina for a spin around Leeds and Bradford. Every cloud, and all that.
