RIP Atlantis
« on: July 21, 2011, 07:30:39 pm »
At 10.45 I announced I was off to watch the landing on TV, since I'd seen the first one take off and land and I wasn't going to miss this one.  I nearly cried; it's worse than Concorde, which could at least be dismissed as a rich man's plaything.  OK, it turned out to be too expensive and slightly riskier than NASA would have wanted, but it was total genius for something commissioned in 1969 and designed in the 1970s.

People were slating the decision to land before dawn, but there are some great shots with the spotlights behind it illuminating the vapour trails.
Never tell me the odds.

I was shocked that both Concord and the Shuttle were retired without any direct replacements in view.

"Rich man's plaything" has given me an idea.  What if four tickets on each Concorde filght were reserved for ordinary people, applying via a lottery?  The lottery revenue could have funded the whole thing.
