... the IE thing is clearly just inertia ... it arrives with the new PC, it works, why change so that selects the users at the "lower end of the spectrum" by default.   Did someone pay for that research?

.... but perhaps more interesting are the reports, today, that Google Chrome has overtaken Firefox in the browser user volume stakes ... I find that hard to believe.

Ok, I'm thick for not getting Firefox to display in Clear Type when Clear Type is otherwise turned off.  It's just a tick box in IE.

Which is cause, and which is effect?

Does the specific choice of browser actually MAKE you move up/down the IQ scale?

I suppose the lack of an enquiring mind is the clue  ;) ;D

One could argue the genius of a browser so simple that even thickos can use it. Computers aren't just for us brainiacs, you know...
It takes blood and guts to be this cool but I'm still just a cliché.

It's a hoax.

...maybe - BUT I think the arguments and thoughts expressed here, including mine, do stand up in terms of the demographic.

It's a great hoax  and reveals an awful lot about those who somehow felt themselves to be of higher intelligence as a result of it.   The attachment to certain brands seems to invoke similar pomposity.   :)

I agree with robgul.  Just because that story was a hoax doesn't mean it isn't true.  It passed the common sense filter of an awful lot of people because it is plausible.

I would not be surprised if there were someone somewhere setting up a site for exactly this research.
Getting there...

Likewise, it doesn't have any credibility of truth.

How many people buy an Apple computer and never change the bundled software?   Likewise smartphones.

Andy G is spot on - for the vast majority of people a computer is simply a tool.   If the tool is sufficient then why bother to change for the sake of change?   Would you be critical of somebody who bought a new bike fitted with components that you do not prefer but decided that they did the job perfectly well so kept them?

Inertia per se is not inherently negative in any way.

As well as those who stick with IE out of habit or lack of knowledge, some of us know the issues and have explored alternatives, but prefer to use IE after all (on certain computers/operating systems), and haven't actually had problems with it, apart from with the occasional website.  It's harsh to be told you're thick for doing that.

Actually I think it's more thick to use an alternative browser just because the geeks have said that's better when you haven't looked into the all details yourself.  I know that doesn't apply to most YACFers, who tend to be tremendously well informed on the technicals, but it does apply to some members of the public.

As moderator it would not be unreasonable for you to delete or at least re-title the topic.  It's clearly intended to antagonise an estimated 50%* of the people who are likely to come across it - never mind the first message is only an external link, the OP still had control over the subject line.

I only have Mod powers for the main Knowledge board, not the sub boards off it (sorry the forum doesn't make that clear), but I will pass on your suggestion, Frankie, to higher beings.

Jaded, the OP, could change the title of the first post, too, if he so wished.

Indeed, one could use the same flawed argument to claim that "Shimano users are thick" but no-one would, would they?

In the back of my mind was the joyful banter often echoing in YACF towers re cantilever brakes and Brooks saddles, but yeah, you're spot on:  Who in their right mind chooses Campagnolo?  ;)   :P

I use Internet Explorer if I wish to make an online Taxicard taxi booking on the first day of a calendar month. This is not possible with Firefox as the drop-down date list is always (n+1) and there's no number 1 on it.
I am not responsible for ComCab's broken software and can't be **sed to do anything about it.

There must be loads of IE users who can only use vanilla browsers at work etc. That does not make them stupid.
