Need to buy a drill - what to get? :-s
« on: 18 August, 2011, 08:59:22 pm »
I want / need to get a drill for minor bike fettling (drilling mudguards / attempting to remove knackered SPD cleats). I realise it's likely those two particular jobs will require different drill end bits (whatever they're called), but first I'd need to buy a drill. Cordless seems more sensible. I don't wanna spend £100s. What should I get? ???

I got a cheap 24V cordless from Screwfix a few years ago.  It's been excellent - plenty of welly for drilling holes in walls but also sufficient subtlety to do/undo screws & bolts

Something cheap.  Pretty much anything will work for those sort of jobs, and if it's going to be used that infrequently there's no point spending lots on it.  If/when you find it's inadequate, then you buy something posh.

I got a cheapo cordless drill for about 15 quid in a B&Q sale, and while it works well for that sort of thing, infrequent use means that the battery is always flat when you need to use it, so I end up mostly using a mains drill or an ancient hand-cranked thing, depending on the delicateness of the task in hand.

This should be OK, right? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/330598131529 Small, cheap (under £30) but should do for the bits 'n' pieces I need it for. (Can you tell I no nothing about this sort of thing?)

I have an Elu cordless drill that no longer charges so I suspect a knackered battery. You're welcome to it if it will be of use.

The problem with cordless is that the batteries can be horrendously expensive.

Plus they last for less time than you need them.
It is simpler than it looks.

That is why they usually come with several batteries  ;)

Thanks for the offer Woofage, but it seems corded is the more sensible option. I'll take a punt on the one Raminphrikesh linked to on Fleabay. If I don't win I'll just keep an eye on what's coming up over the next week or so.

Ta for help.

I meant that you might want them to work after 18 months.  ;D

I would not buy a used cordless drill because you don't know how knackered the battery is.  Used mains or new cordless makes sense.

Sorted. Some cheap, corded, drill from Fleabay. Now it's time to spend money on drill bits.

Thanks guys.
