The greatest club run in the world!
« on: August 19, 2011, 11:17:19 pm »
I've recently finished Stephen Roche's autobiography and read a bit that made me go dizzy with excitement (doesn't take a lot at my age! ::-))

In 1987, after he had already won the Giro and T de F, he was due to ride the World Road Race Championship in Villach, Austria.  IIRC he was staying in northern Italy and decided to unwind by riding to Villach with Sean Kelly, Paul Kimmage and Martin Earley.

So, the best cyclist on the planet chatting with a former World's No 1 and winner of countless one day classics accompanied by two other top-level professional Irish riders.

Jeeeezus, what wouldn't I have given to be the fifth man in that club run ....   I'd have even bought the lunches that day!!

In 1994 I was in Lourdes for the TDF rest day, as we were making our way to St Marie du Campan to gatecrash the Etape du Tour we were caught up by the entire Festina Team with whom we rode for as long we could, nattering to Neil Stephens and Steven Hodge.

After Jesper Skibby packed in the 1996 Leeds International Classic at the feed zone in Huddersfield, he asked me what the quickest way back to Leeds was. I happily rode with him part of the way since it was also my way home.

I wish, he'd done about 150km at race speed and he could still ride up the hills in the big ring while I was on my limit just hanging on !
