Upper Thames - 5th November 2011
« on: 25 September, 2011, 09:58:49 am »
I rode the route yesterday, and had a great day out - weather was near-perfect with plenty of sunshine and little breeze.  By popular request I have changed the route between Bicester and Chipping Norton, passing slightly further north than previously.  I think the new route is an improvement, with scenery at least as good, and terrain slightly easier.  And the distance is within 100 metres of being the same.

Details of the event are at https://sites.google.com/site/thamesvalleyaudax/upper-thames

I have about 25 entries so far.

I rode that altered route the other way earlier this month on a DIY and agree, it is much nicer.

I'm aiming to do this again, will be faster than last year, I hope!

I'm in.

Will now try to persuade the stoker that it's a nice tandem-ride!
Half term's when the traffic becomes mysteriously less bad for a week.

I'm in for the 5th time; a fantastic ride made even better by polishing off Quiet Lane early on (and a pubbe at the end)

"Quiet Lane" seems merely to be Oxfordshire County Council's jargon for poorly (or should that be totally non-) maintained road.  It's clearly a generic term, with lots of roads thus designating, and all having that one common feature!

Prompted by the thread and seduced by the ease of paypal, I've entered.  Will be interesting to try out the revised route as I've not ridden the event since it changed.

I do hope the run into the HQ takes us up onto higher ground, with clear views of the surrounding parishes and counties.  One of the joys of the event is seeing fireworks bloom across the horizon at around 7pm, as the rest of the country celebrates religious supression and the ruthless crushing of political dissent  :D

Remember: when you can see Didcot Power Station you are still only half-way round.  ;D

There is a hill with a good vantage point within the final mile or so; you can linger and watch if you feel so inclined knowing that the end is but 5 minutes away.  You'll be able to see displays in Didcot and Wallingford (as well as the villages in between) from there.

Apart from the Bicester-Ch Norton section (which is new for everybody this year) the route is exactly the same as when you last did it - you just start at a different point on the route.

I have a feeling I've already entered. But it might just be that I planned to enter.

Phil, am I on your list yet?

No, not there yet Ross.  Nor on my PayPal account.

Feeling very un-fit at the moment, but have a series of events over the coming weeks which should (hopefully) get me a bit fitter again and in time for this event.

So this is definitely something to aim for.

I'm in. This covers a lot of my local roads, and I entered last year but was defeated by a bad cough and cold.

So I'm looking forward to it.

No problem, must have imagined it. Or got confused with last year. Or the year before...

Should be there now.

Yup, thanks

I'm in. Just paid on line.

This route is top. I have done it from Sonning Common before and the start has moved. Should be good.
