A big group goes overnight via Portsmouth - Ouistreham; I did that my first time in 2003.

Last time a smaller group of us, led by Teethgrinder, did Newhaven - Dieppe; the main disadvantage of that trip being arriving at silly o'clock and having to ride a fair chunk in the dark before breakfast. [What am I, as a grizzled AUK Ancien complaining about that!!] We stopped overnight in Vernon, but on the way back went via Rouen, then got an afternoon sailing, catching the last train home from London. If I recall correctly though, a prettier route to St Quentin than the above.

Another one in the 'First do your first SR then see how it goes camp.' Though I fear I've chosen a tough first 600 this year, York-Langham-York?! Oh well... maybe we should have a first PBP thread?

Thanks for the thoughts on riding to and from .... I suspect work/family commitments will dictate some of this and that's going to need to be decided nearer the time... Got the BCM to worry about enjoy first  ;D

Assuming I get in.  (There's always that risk that injury or illness around about April time scuppers qualifying rides) I will probably drive over and I expect there will be space for 2 others (not a tandem) if I do so.

For those who have never done this ride before, I whole-heartedly recommend riding over at the very least. It will be a great prelude to (possibly) the furthest distance you have ridden in your life and is an excellent experience.

Do it

I'm giving thsi one some thought for next.  Very much like the idea of cycling over.  Trouble is I live 2 miles from the ferry port in Plymouth.  So I'd end up doing Brittany-Paris-Brittany-Paris-Brittany!!  Maybe I'll ride to Newhaven first?

after two years as a sleeping audax member, i finally got my act together and completed my first audax the 3Down 300km in April, and am hoping to complete an SR series this year, with the aim of going on to do the PBP in 2015,
i`m gonna concentrate on doing a few 200s over the next couple of months and if all goes well then attempt a pair of 600s in august and september, as i cant find a 400

The rides I've entered.
Sun 18 May 2014 200km The Great Escape from Look Mum No Hands! 49 Old St, London EC1V
Sun 08 Jun 2014 205km The London Ditchling Devil from Wimbledon Common
Sun 20 Jul 2014 207km The Devils Punchbowl 200 from Steyning, W Sussex
Sat 04 Oct 2014 207km The AAAnfractuous from Chalfont St Peter

The rides Im thinking about doing.
Sat 09 Aug 2014 600km Windsor - Chester - Windsor from Windsor
Sat 13 Sep 2014 606km The Flatlands from Great Dunmow

Trying an SR this year to see whether I'm woman enough for PBP next year, as I love the idea of riding it. First 400 (Llanfair) and 600 (long Welsh name from Bushley) to come in the next 2 months. We shall see...

Will have to drive/train it down though, as I'll be struggling to carry everything I need on my shorty bike as it is - unless I manage to get my tourer fixed by then (needs some Argos frame treatment, as slightly bent after an encounter with a mega pothole).

I believe WCW is becoming popular.  Might be worth committing yourself.

So are you still up for this now you've done the BCM Smiffy?

It is the next natural step up now I think for me...
It's a reverse Elvis thing.

thanks for the motivation Caerau - now the legs are recovering PBP does seem attractive.    I am a bit concerned over the time needed for the qualifying rides, but I just need to get stuff booked and in the calendar.  Doing the BCM (I know not everyones choice of a first audax) was to ensure entry to PBP with early registration - and the current Mrs S has already given approval so am running out of excuses.

Is PBP on your agenda Caerau?

Oh for sure, it's been on the agenda since I booked my first 300 last year when Marcusjb told me I would be there and I laughed at him.  He was right, this stuff hooks you right in.

You know I'd clean forgotten about the pre-registration thing - in the bag isn't it.   Unless one wants to pre-register even earlier... MC  :demon:

Trying an SR this year to see whether I'm woman enough for PBP next year, as I love the idea of riding it.

Non ce un problemo! And you've got a whole year to figure out how to bodge more luggage on to the bike  :D

One medium/small saddlebag is enough.

I am hoping to do PBP, fingers crossed the timing is good!
Does not play well with others

Yes, assuming you also have a bike trailer.  :P
You're only as successful as your last 1200...
