An occasionally portly friend of mine did complain the lack of one* when spinning downhill.

* why are bras singular when trousers are plural?

A pair of trousers or pantaloons comprised two separate garments at one time.  Handy for ventilating the nethers.

Only now is this thread becoming a source of useful information.

My grandson has been advised that BMX cycles with wheels of 20" or smaller are only required to have one brake. His parents checked with Brighton Police and were told this.

On a BMX there's the option of wedging a foot on the back wheel - therefore there are 2 means of braking the bike.  :demon: :demon: :demon:

Yes but if your mother catches you doing this and wrecking your trainers in the process, expect pain.  ;D

As to brakes on fixed wheels - I am very thankful that I have two on mine.  I go down some serious hills and I can't brake with my legs for the whole distance.  I am getting stronger gradually, but I still must use the brakes.
