I can't decide whether to have

  • supermarket pizza with added veg
  • vegetable bhuna and pilau rice from the takeaway
  • pasta and homemade tomato sauce
  • lentil stew
  • aubergine and chickpea tagine with brown rice (except I think I might not have any rice)

Roast beef for lunch.  A rather good piece considering it came from Sainsbury's (half price).  Fabulous sprouts this week.

I cooked the meat so there was still a hint of pink left, but the remaining 2/3 or so has gone back in the oven to cook it all the way through so it can be sliced for pick 'n' mix lunches this week.

Pheasant. A brace from our local butcher for six or seven quid. Mrs. Hall will be using her pressure cooker-fu, plus some streaky bacon to ensure tender moist mouthfuls.  Nom.

Beef casserole.  The beef has been swimming in red wine all day.

Bambi burger.

I probably shouldn't have had the whole bottle of 2006 Sangiovese to wash it down, but dammit, it was sooo drinkable...

To mark the end of the year and the beginning of well deserved holidays I had a rock lobster, followed by a lovely stirloin steak and then some profiterolles for a late lunch, early dinner yesterday. E enjoyed some good meat too washed by a lovely red wine. Baby G went for the English option of sausages, peas and mash and the Sunday ice cream for dessert. Yum!

Piri-piri salmon kebabs for starters, followed by game stew.

I'd forgotten about the already-defrosting salmon fillet when I got the stew out of the freezer...

A Christmas Eve family tradition - in fact, the only one we invented ourselves.

Toad in the hole with peas and onion gravy.
