« on: 02 April, 2008, 11:03:40 pm »
Marj & I have booked a plot for the caravan.

Our attendance will be subject to Marj's yet- to-be-advised date for knee replacement surgery

I plan to be there with the Fell club lot, I also have a diy300 card sat here from last year that goes to my Dads at Wetherby.
Never did get up there on the bike last year.

Rich.

Myself and Mrs. TKP will be there but our plans to ride there and pitch in the lightweight section may be scuppered by Mrs. TKP's new working arrangements. Discussions will be held this coming weekend.

Hmm, 21st, 22nd of June.

I'm interested, but have never been before.

Is it best to camp on site or to stay a few miles away and cycle in?

Definitely stay on site provided you are happy camping. The first year we went we stayed in a really nice B&B just across the road from the site. We felt that we missed out on a lot of atmosphere and didn't really feel part of things. The second year we camped and it turned out our suspicions were correct - a completely different experience. Much more fun all round.

OK, thanks.

Next question - can one drive there, dump the car on the outskirts and then camp in the lightweight section? Or do I stick to the "motorists" section of the campsite.

Work and family permitting I will be there (be daft not to as I only live 30 miles away!)

As long as the knee op doesn't stop her baking fruit cake..

I'm coming with one or two kids -- camping in the lightweight section. How to fit all the gear on my bike will be a challenge..

I don't think you can drive onsite, offload then drive away and claim to be a lightweight camper.

But there is nothing to stop you parking a few miles away and riding in. I live 10 miles from the racecourse, dunno if there is anyone closer/more convenient.

Parking round York is a nightmare.

You could park up on the Knavesmire directly adjacent to the Rally, carry your gear or load it onto your bikes then walk/ride in to the lightweight section leaving your car parked up over the weekend.

If Marj has had surgery before hand & is in the recovery/convalescence stage she will not be baking. :(

I don't think I'm going to make it to this years rally.  :(

I'm buggering off for a couple of weeks starting the weekend after. And doubt that I'll be able to get a long weekend off work.
Don't ask.

Next next question:

Can one ride to Boston, swim to Liverpool via Reykjavik while dragging camping gear, leap aboard a passing tandem on its way to York, and then camp in the lightweight section, if one is not actually qualified to be a member of the CTC?

I 'spect they'd make an exception if you'd gone to all that trouble to get there :)

Afaik there isn't a requirement to actually be in the CTC to go to the York rally. I haven't been a member for a few years now, and I've still gone.

Is it like the Mildenhall rally? If so, I'll probably keep it parochial this year.

I'm 'avin' a think about this.

Does one have to book in advance or just turn up?

I quite fancy a weekend of it. I could probably bring the Thorn and a small tent. I doubt if Mrs. Wow would want to come - but she might. I think asking her might be a way to find out.
