A NW Scotland dilemma
« on: 22 July, 2008, 09:18:18 am »
We are going to Applecross, meeting my mum and sister there for a night at the Applecross Inn

I have several choices...

1) Ride haflway and  have an overnight stop. A leisurely way to do the trip. However it eats into Mrs Jaded's birthday! (in fact uses up a lot of it  :o)
2) Ride all the way in a day - starting at about 4:00am so as to not get there too late.
2b) As 2a but alter the route slightly to make the last 5 miles the Bealach na Ba!  :o :o
3) Go in the car with everyone else

It is 120 miles and 4km of climbing. I've only ever ridden that far once, on Rogerzilla's ride.

The weeather is forcast to be slightly damp and not too windy and reasonably warm for the time of year.

Views?
It is simpler than it looks.

It's turned out to be a bit academic.

A summer virus has reduced me to a wheezing wreck climbing the 50m from the pebble beach to the cottage. So it is choice 3 for me tomorrow.  :'( :'(

I'm heading upwards on Saturday.  Looking forward to a few rides, but Applecross is a bit non-north to where I''ll be: some great cycling round the peninsula (better than Bealach IMO)

I have a few rides from Bettyhill planned.

You are probably way too fast for me, but I'm Ullapool based for the next 2.5 weeks...

Try the Strathnaver Trail to Altnaharra then back up to Tongue then Bettyhill

Also the route past Ben Hope is worth it

Strathnaver trail is Flat   :)

That is one of the routes I'll be riding   A nice wee route before breakfast one morning...only 80km
I'll also be doing Strathnaver the turning off to Kinbrace and up to Melvich and back to Bettyhill...just over 100km

and this one:
Bicycle Path - assynt 300 at Bikely.com

I think I'll be familiar with Strathnaver by the end of the week.   ;D

I'd include the road from Lochinver to Drumrunie Corner via Inverkirkaig and past Stac Pollaidh myself.

Yes, I'll be doing that one again next week, or the week after. I have a 100km loop from where I am that includes it. Lovely. Plus pies from Lochinver Larder!
