Actually, possibly to your surprise, I've voted yes.

It is a sport, but not one that I have any interest in whatsoever.

I mean, I'm even prepared to agree that the Falling Over And Crying game is a sport.

Golf is a sport for the simple reason that it's something you do outside, often while being rained on, and I'm rubbish at it.

Golf played as it should is a sport.

Golf played by MAMIFCs isn't.

By that definition so are gardening, shopping and having a barbecue.

I don't think it is, but I think there are only five sports: running, swimming, cycling, rowing and cross-country skiing. The rest are just silly games or legalised thuggery.  ;)

But the silly games are the best ones.

(Except golf.)

Golf has the potential to be a sport if it became more like Biathlon. It could be timed, with points awarded for less strikes of the ball. No caddies and the golfist has to carry all their own clubs, courses could be made longer and hillier. Brand it 'Ironman'.
Golf could be the new cycling. Make it like a sportive and charge £50 a round.

Golf is about getting balls in holes and football is about getting balls in goals. Assuming nobody would say football isn't a sport, I don't see why golf isn't.

People decide for themselves what is or isn't a sport rather than take the BBC's word for it, so it's a pretty silly question really...

Golf, snooker, darts and bowls are games, not sports. Motor-racing is a pastime.

I'd say 'sport' requires a degree of physical exertion, requiring either strength or endurance or both.
Otherwise, it's a 'game'.
Either may require a degree of skill.

Where sex fits in, I couldn't possibly comment.

sport/spôrt/
Noun:
An activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others.

Thats and, not or.

Where's the physical exertion?
Walking from the buggy to the green?

Twatting the ball around the course, obviously. You could say "athletes" who take part in shot put, javelin, discus etc are not sports people if you like. Chucking something every now and again is no different to twatting something every now and again...

Covers at least two of the above!

Also leaves cycling as a sport so long as you don't dress up for it.  ;D

I've voted yes, by the way.

It's up to what culture you seem to have grown up in or adapted into.

I don't really see golf or cricket as sports, but handball  very much so.

I guess a lot of you see it the other way around.

I don't see how handball could be considered anything other than a sport. It's just that most people in GB have probably never heard of it.
