From your reference to 'metric goons', & the tone of the rest of your post, I detect an enormous dose of hypocrisy. You're "[g]oing on about one system of measurement over another", by denigrating those who prefer a particular system, & doing so in a way which suggests an irrational dislike of that system.

I have no problem with a person's weight being given in stones and pounds or in kg.  My brain sorts either.  However, for some reason I have difficulty with the american habit of using only pounds.
190 lbs.  It sounds heavy, but I've no idea how heavy.  Yes, I know I can quickly work it out mentally, but I don't want to. I want to understand now, in the moment of hearing or reading, without interrupting the flow.

I grew up reading lots of Just William books, so I find a quarter of gobstoppers for a farthing has a comfortable familiarity.

(I'm currently reading an alternate history series where an industrialising 17th century Europe seems to be standardising on decimal feet, as a compromise between politics and common sense.)
What's that, then? (Interest aroused). Any good?

It's not so much the main canon, but the fan-written contributions (which are canonised through a complicated and hard to explain collective collaboration process) that make it.  There's an awful lot of tedious military stuff from the military history buffs, and the intricacies of all the religious politics can be overwhelming at times, but at the same time so many stories full of glorious little details by someone with a bit of specialised knowledge or an interest in a particular subject or character.  Everything from radio and aeronautical engineering through medicine and horse-breeding to politics and music.

Health warning:  It's literally endless.  People keep writing more.
Careful, Kim. Your sarcasm's showing...

As a child of the early seventies, I find myself swapping between units according to which gives the roundest number.  Eg, "It's about a metre and a half long and a couple of inches wide."  ::-)

I know I'm 91kg, but haven't a clue what that is in stones. It would probably depress me... :-[

Regarding baby weights, both our two were given in kg, and we had to do a conversion before we could tell anybody (of any age) as everybody wanted it in lbs. I can't remember what the figures were now, though.
Life is too important to be taken seriously.

So, are you a metric goon?

But first we have to decide whether the thread is left- or right-handed, male or female, ISO or ANSI, etc etc.

BONG!.....

Footballer may or may not be a Virgin.

BBC (sinking lower by the day) Sports Headline
Quote
David Luiz: PSG defender dismisses 'virgin' reports

This is a story, by the BBC, that takes a rather aloof stance on trashy journalists asking such irrelevant and invasive questions but then runs it as their own "Virgin" headline.

It's getting fairly typical for the BBC to descend into "Hello" magazine news reporting I'm afraid.

I'll give them a pass on it today though since its the hottest July day on record.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.
