Is that photo for real or has photoshop intervened?  It seems to me that if they *really* wanted you to get off your bike then it would be simpler and cheaper to not have a cycle path there.  :-\
If it is for real  then  (even if it has gone now)
Yes it was real, though the photo may exaggerate slightly due to foreshortening with the telephoto lens.
I was doing a lot of Work in Harlow at the time it was built and remember my steadily increasing incredulity as the posts and signs went up. I pointed an EHO at the forum thread about it, so may have helped get the signs taken down.

There was supposed to be a development on the other side of the cycle path, hence all the access ways having those signs.

Translates badly as "Cystitis dismount".

Pretty unpleasant if you've ever been forced to perform one.   :'(

It is white lettering in a blue rectangle. It does NOT need to be obeyed.

The legal requirement is when there is a picture of a bicycle painted on one lane of a segregated path. That is the cycle track. The other lane without the picture of a bicycle is a footpath and it is illegal to ride a bike on that half.

Cycle tracks are only advisory, and it is the cyclist who chooses whether he/she uses them. In the situation I have described above, if the cyclist chooses not to use the cycle track, he/she should use the road.

If the cyclist chooses to use the road, they are not legally required to stop and park at every white 'P' in a blue rectangle.

If you're referring to the Harlot one's then no.  No, there wasn't.  It's already developed and has been for years before some council twonk decided to erect about thirty sets of signs.  They even had them either side of a bus stop.

Brand new housing estate on the edge of Didcot. Brand new cycle-paths.

Same old ludicrous design

Luckily the nice people at Harbug are chasing the CC and the builders (Taylor Wimpey), but if anyone fancies sending a grink, be my guest!

Stuff like this:

Brand new residential road - just how dangerous is it?!?

https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/3808/ltn-2-08.pdf is the document you are looking for SOTB. http://www.transportscotland.gov.uk/strategy-and-research/publications-and-consultations/cycling-by-design for those NOTB.

The relevant sections should indicate that teh designers are incompetent as you should never design to need a Cyclists Dismount sign. Not on newbuild like that.

Things to check are: width of two way shared use paths (including the space off the sides of the path - indicate that failure to provide paths to standard may leave them open to liability, or to not have that regarded as a path in the assessment of whether they have fulfilled their planning obligations.

There was a cycling ban as part of the same set of roadworks which sent cyclists on 5km diversion to avoid a 1km section of road.

Classic - I had to look it up but it says cycstitis retards.  Either a misspelt solo effort on google translate or a very fluent welsh Clarkson with a sense of humour.  Either way at least they tried.

"Cyclists dismount" is surely an observation, to which the reply might be "yes, we do, sometimes".

Over here it's "Cyclistes mettez pied à terre", meaning "Cyclists, put foot on ground", so all you need to do to comply is touch the ground with your toe as you ride merrily by.

I saw one when driving the other day.  On a slip road to a car only duel A road.

Suppose it was sensible advice-ish but I think if I was to really think about carrying on I'd rather cycle than walk in such circumstances.  ;)

I didn't get a picture, but there was a temporary one next to small roadwork in Purley yesterday.

The roadworks were entirely on the pavement?

Maybe the contractors were from Birmingham?

I might not object to a sign saying "Crap Cyclists Dismount".

As said above, it is merely advisory. I interpret it as "we, the council cannot be bothered to make this bit of the highway safe enough for cyclists so we suggest that you become a pedestrian until you pass this bit"
I am often asked, what does YOAV stand for? It stands for Yoav On A Velo
