Three Colors: Blue.  First time I've seen it, despite it being close to 20 years old and it being the type of film I tend to gravitate towards.  It didn't disappoint, deserving of its reputation.  Juliette Binoche plays the same character she has for as long as I can remember; if it works it works, so there's no issue with that somewhat limited range.

Complete contrast to the film I found myself sucked into before then.  17 Again.  I found it vaguely sinister, difficult to pinpoint why.  I could try and link the two films (reconnecting to relationships) but that would give the latter film perhaps too much depth.  Fundamentally, as far as I can see, it was an opportunity for Hollywood to monetize poster boy Zac Effron.

Managed another one last night, a German SF thing called Cargo. Not quite so good but I made it through the whole thing.

It was that or Jean de Florette. I'm saving that one though.

I hope you realise that watching "Jean de Florette" AND "Manon des Sources" in close succession is about as good as cinema gets.

The two films viewed as one is even better than the sum of their already excellent parts.
I last saw them umpteen years ago. So I bought the box set for times such as these. The music is brilliant in both of them, so the half-decent set up I now have should enhance the experience.

Introduced Primo to The Usual Suspects last night and his reaction was all I'd hoped it would be - he's wanting to watch it again tonight to see if they cheated.  ;D

Finally saw Kill Bill.

Usual Tarantino rubbish, but at least this one made sense.

Manon des Sources. Stunningly good. Jean de Florette sets it up well for the ultimate, tragic scenes. Although there is a happy ending element too, of course.

It's not. It's bloody dreadful.

Hugo. I thought this was overly long and I struggled to get through this in three sittings. I think it was distributed as 3D which probably explains the ... oh god I can't be bothered. Self indulgent tripe.

Earlier in the week Las Acacias - an Argentinian/Uraguayan film. A lorry driver gives a lift to a mother and her baby to Buenos Aires. Not much happens. The way the the relationship between the driver and his passengers changes is a bit obvious really but charming none the less.

I have just googled the cost of making Hugo - it came in over budget at $170M. I reckon Las Acacias cost about $500 and half of that would have been for the diesel.

Romance & Cigarettes [2005].

Was it any good? Haven't a clue, but I enjoyed watching it.

And as for Kate Winslet, well really....  :-*

Watched the 'real' Frost/Nixon interview on TV about a week back. It was just like the film. Towards the end, when Nixon was not quite saying, 'yes I did it', there was a cut away to frost sitting there looking like a bunny in the headlights with his mouth open. Classic.

Yes. Watched it this evening. Old Frosty, blimey, what a chancer!

Senna. Was riveted for 40 minutes, then had to turn it off as PTSD kicked in when the first body was shown on the track.

Looked like a very good film.
It is simpler than it looks.

Land and Freedom, an oldish Ken Loach film about people fighting in the Spanish civil war.

Fantastic it was.

Good film.

By a coincidence one of the last British volunteers died before Christmas.

The irony of a obituary in the Mail for someone who fought fascism in Spain when they were praising Mosley in the UK....

OT sorry, but after the fall of communism in Hungary, there was a scrabble to remove all the Soviet-era statuage. Understandable, I suppose. However, they also included the monument to the Hungarian contribution to the International Brigade. The commies weren't even in power then, so a strange course of action. Luckily, someone had them foresight to place them all in a park on the outskirts of Buda, and it's very much worth a trip if you're ever there.

Land and Freedom was good, but depressing, as it showed how chaotic and splintered the resistance to Franco was. Must see if it's on Netflix, though I doubt it...

"Rise of the Guardians". Best animated feature I've seen in ages, with stuff for both adults and kids.
