Coming soon:

Guy Ritchie's remaking The Man From Uncle with Tom Cruise as Napoleon Soho. Sounds like shit on toast.

Him off Rust and Bone is making "A Little Chaos" - he's a gardener at Versailles who meets the strict authoritarian head gardener Kate Winslet. I expect they resent each other at first and then  fall in lurrrve.

'Mud' with Matthew McConaughey and Reese Witherspoon. A most enjoyable film, well shot and with some excellent performances. Sadly marred by an unnecessary (imo) shoot-out at the end. The same story could have been told, the same themes explored without it.

Such stuff concerns me; why do some films feel the need to have guns, killings, car chases, etc? Ok, in action films it's in context but it sometimes seems to me that guns have become a common currency. It can ruin an otherwise bloody good film for me.

Don't be put off by the fact that it stars Mr & Mrs Zeta Jones.

This looks good:

Something of a Nick Cage theme going tonight.

(NB: This is all largely wallpaper - I'm actually working)

Gone in 60 Seconds - Decent soundtrack, lots of one liners, and Angelina J for some News-based topical connectivity.
Kick Ass - Decent soundtrack, lots of one liners, sweary child .

I'm guessing I'll have time - work is open-ended...

Birdy - Decent soundtrack, freak deaky weirdos - and a Most Excellent ending.

Brings back memories.  No, I didn't grow up in a Jewish enclave in rural Imperial Russia.  Just reminds me of the sort of films they used to show on telly back when I were a lad, weekdays and weekends.  Times change.  :-\

Dale and Tucker Vs Evil

Started watching it not expecting much, but it actually turned out to be a wryly funny schlock comedy.  A clever take on the teen slasher movie (think The Cabin).  Well worth some of your free time.

This is why I have the BluRay of Dr Zhivago in my collection.

Star Trek.

I've been holding off watching it because I find JJ Abram's 'style' to be intensely irritating, and he doesn't disappoint here. A very good movie spoiled by gratuitous 'special' effects ; I now want track Abrams down and hit him repeatedly over the head until he forgets what lens-flare is.

Having recently watched 'Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle', seeing John Cho as Sulu was a bit of a mind-screw ;)

I really liked it!  Great Star Trek fun.  Loads of self-referential stuff.  Hilarious.

We've been a bit underwhelmed by the Three Colours trilogy recently. Not sure what I was expecting but to me they weren't that much to write home about. If anyone wants to take the trouble to explain what we were missing I'd be happy to read it.

We enjoyed Le Cercle Rouge more.

Ronin.  Sean Bean starting his 'Not making it to the end of the film' career meme, De Niro employing two of his three facial expressions, Jean Reno and great car chases.

Jonathan Pryce's Oirish accent was painful though

Up In Smoke and Pineapple Express.
Back to back.

I seem to have watched rather a lot of stoner movies recently ...  8)

Mississippi Burning.  May have taken some liberties with The Truth for dramatic porpoises, but something like that happened in my lifetime.  The mere thought of this makes me want to open my premium economy-size box of Stab.

On the plus side, it's got Frances McDormand.  In it.

Harold Lloyd in "High & Dizzy" and "The Freshman."

Something a bit different last evening in that these two black and white classics were shown at the Symphony Hall Birmingham along with live music by the CBSO under Carl Davis.

Most enjoyable with the live score really adding to the films.

Life of Pi

On the plus side, it was lovely to look at. And it had the longest credits I've ever seen on a movie. The production must have employed the population of a small nation.

But, yes, whilst a faithful version of the book the film did somehow lack the enigma.

Cabin in the Woods (again). I never usually bother with the director's commentaries that clutter up DVDs, but I was curious so gave it a spin. It's quite obvious that Mr Wheedon and Mr Goddard really, really enjoy what they do, and I'd like to do their jobs when I grow up, please.

Obv. statement "Aren't they all?"

I shall add that to my list of must sees.

erm, no.

Volver is pretty soundly hetero with no camp element. Nor 'Women on the edge of a nervous breakdown'.

The latest is *really* camp.

I'm not a fan of Almodovar. He does what he does very well, I acknowledge that, it's just not my sort of thing. It's as if everything he's about, I just don't get. The style IS the substance sort of thing.
