‘Calvary’, from the people that brought you ‘The Guard’. It’s an interesting, if somewhat harrowing film - IMDB has this very précis précis:
“After he is threatened during a confession, a good-natured priest must battle the dark forces closing in around him”.
The writer and director wanted to take a different approach on church abuse and wanted to see the effect on a ‘good’ priest if confronted by the weight of the effect that this abuse has had on the wider society, all in a very allegorical way. The various trailers and publicity tried to imply that it’s a black comedy in the mould of ‘The Guard’ and ‘In Bruges’ but it’s not – it’s a very stark drama and worth watching.
